Please forward to any interested faculty. There will be additional e-mails about this program over the
summer; however, we wanted to get this information out before the spring semester is over.
----------------------------------------The National Endowment of the Humanities Summer Stipend Program supports individuals pursing
advanced research that contributes to scholarly knowledge or to the public’s understanding of the
humanities. Successful applicants receive $6,000 for two consecutive months of full-time research and
writing.
Program Highlights:
 The NEH deadline for applications is October 1, 2015 for projects beginning May 2016
 Application is submitted by the individual, not by the university
 Only two faculty members per institution may submit applications
 A faculty member must be nominated by the UNLV nominating official
 Interested faculty must notify the Office of Sponsored Programs of their interest in submitting a
proposal via email at osp@unlv.edu by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21. If there are more than
two applicants, a review committee will be formed. The applicants will be notified to submit
their proposal via email to their Dean. The Dean or designee will then forward the proposal to
osp@unlv.edu. All applicants will be notified of the review committee’s decision within two
weeks, allowing enough time for final application submission.
NEH invites projects related to its new initiative, The Common Good: The Humanities in the Public
Square. This initiative seeks to connect the study of the humanities to the current conditions of national
life. Many of today’s challenges require more than ever the forms of understanding and knowledge
represented by the humanities. They require the broadest possible engagement of scholars and the
public with the resources of the humanities, including but not limited to the study of language,
literature, history, philosophy, comparative religion, and ethics. The study of the humanities can help
illuminate the complexity of many contemporary challenges while enriching our understanding of the
common good.
The Common Good initiative incorporates the Standing Together initiative, which encourages projects
related to war and military service.
The stipend is awarded to the individuals not the institution; therefore, the proposal is submitted by the
individual. All applicants must register with Grants.gov and create a user name and password. It is
highly recommended to begin the process at least one week before the October 1st deadline.
Detailed instructions can be found on the NEH website at
http://www.neh.gov/grants/research/summer-stipends . Please share this information with your
faculty, and urge them to notify OSP of their interest by Friday, August 21.
Thank you.
