Curious 2 3 Chapter 1 MEEP! The Umpire blew his whistle, “The Piranha’s have scored a goal”, the umpire yelled. “Yes go Darwin Piranha’s!” yelled Michael, “Come on Piranha’s let’s go!” Susan squealed. Susan and Michael support the team, and they live together in an apartment In town. Michael is a sports reporter and has short spiky hair, Susan is a gymnast. Michael’s nephew Ben is in the Piranhas team, every Saturday Susan and Michael go and see him play a match. But today was a special day because his team was in the grand final. Michael was Jotting down the scores and highlights to say on the sporting news tonight. The Piranhas were taking on Brisbane Tigers, which is the best team in Australia, It is a very close match. The Tigers are losing by one try and the tension in the air is building. The huge crowed is screaming enough decibels to equal a rock concert. 4 The heat in the air makes it even more tense as you can hear the dirt crunching as the players ran. Everyone was very curious to see who will win, Susan and Michael could see the team captain Mark McGoogan, who was a tough kid. Then they also saw the boy’s coach George, who was very friendly patient coach, but he was very serious when it came to games. He was even more serious at this game. He was determined to win and the Piranha’s to become the new junior champs . It was a long and exciting game everyone wanted to know who would win, “This tension is driving me mad!” Michal squealed, “There is so much that I’m about to faint!” Allright let’s see how we go,” Yes we scored a try. Let’s go! Let’s go!” screamed Michael,”MEEEP” “The Game goes to, Darwin Piranhas. 5 “WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!” screamed Michael at the top of his voice, “Yes! yes! yes!” “Oh my gosh we won!” screamed the coach we won! “Mates we won! This is a dream come true!” “Yes go Piranhas!” screamed the crowd. “I now announce The Piranha’s number one on the ladder” said the umpire. “We are the champions my friends!” yelled the team in enjoyment they were really happy to be on top. They have trained so hard for this moment and they won,” That’s my boy out there!” Shouted Michael “Okay let’s go re-fill our drink bottles from the tap” said The Coach, “you guys must be thirsty.” The Piranhas dashed towards the filling taps “Hey” Said Ben“the taps don’t work!” Ben complained “Aww, Come on.” The team mumbled. “Anyway we should go and visit the nursery.” “Lets tell them the good news!” “They will love the news!” screeched the team 6 CHAPTER 2 Clouds of dust covered over the field as the excitement was bursting out of the team. As the excited Piranhas bolted down to the nursery to tell Mitchell (the nursery owner) about the thrill of them winning, their feet scuffed through the dry earth. As the team walked into the nursery, they saw a bad site, some of the plants were dead, while other’s dry leaves and lack of flowers showed just how dehydrated they were. Mitchell was standing behind the counter, staring at the empty nursery. His face was pale and his eyes looked as empty as the ponds outside on display. “It’s the drought! All my plants are dying!” he moaned sadly. The team looked all around the nursery, seeing just how dehydrated the plants looked. Even though the football players still felt thrilled, a lot of it seemed to be taken away by Mitchell’s sadness. The team Captain quizzed Mitchell, “What drought?” After a quick explanation by Mitchell about the impact of no rain for six years, the team understood why they couldn’t get water from the tap. 7 “Anyway this is the good news. We won!” The team barked. “Good job. But my nursery, it’s a mess.” Mitchell said sadly. About five seconds later Susan and Michael came in and said, “Where did the plants go?” “It’s the drought.” Mitchell said sadly. “We have to do something about it.” Susan said. “Something must happen or else the plants won’t live.” said Michael “Maybe we can raise some money somehow to help the whole town.” said Susan That night Susan, Michael, Mitchell and Coach George went to a restaurant to discuss what they were going to do about the shortage of water in their town. “So we could make a hole so we get water from the ground.” said Susan. “GREAT!” Mitchell said in excitement. No sooner had Susan suggested her thoughts, than heaps of ideas came out from the others around the table. “We could have a football game!” “We could have stalls to buy stuff!” “We could have games!” 8 “We could sell pizza!” “We could have donuts and hotdogs and soft drink!” Susan waved her arms around across the table as if she was trying to catch all her friend’s ideas. After a couple of hours they had sorted out all the ideas into place and had a master plan to raise money. Susan had time in the next week to organise a meeting to present their plans to the mayor. Chapter 3 The small team, with Susan as the leader, had been organising the papers and blueprints for the festival over the past few night. Their bodies felt exhausted and they felt like they were going to collapse from lack of sleep as they walked into the Council offices in town. Lots of papers and ideas filled their big bags, 9 were tucked under their arms and even continued to fill their minds. While they were waiting anxiously for their appointment with the mayor. “Mayor Roberts” Susan softly said to the mayor “yes” the Mayor replied. “We have come here to ask you if we can start a fundraiser to find water and help people get through the drought” Susan questioned the Mayor. “How are you going to get the water?” the Mayor asked Susan “We’re going to have to dig a hole in the ground to find the water” Susan responded to the mayor by showing him the plans which Michael, Mitchell and her had put together over the past couple of days. Her enthusiasm seemed to be making Mayor Roberts more curious, making him ask lots of questions about it. “that’s a fantastic plan but you will have to raise at least $3,534 dollars to get the drill 10 and gather the water” said the Mayor. So Susan and Michael drove home, feeling thrilled and excited that they could get started immediately on their planning. As soon as they arrived home, they rang Mitchel and told him that it’s okay to go ahead with the planning. Susan said how the mayor was willing to support the fundraising event for the water hole. CHAPTER 4 “Here we go, time to make some calls.” said Susan “Ring-a-ring-Ring…” “Hello, George speaking.” 11 “Can you come with me to Pizzarito to try and convince the pizza man to donate pizza at the festival?” asked Susan. “Sure. Let’s meet there in half an hour from now.” replied George “Ring-a-ring. Ring…” “Hello, it’s Blackwood Nursery” “Mitchell, can you set up a Facebook page for the festival, maybe call it something like ‘Fix the Drought’?” “Yeah sure.” I will do it later when I’m not busy.” answered Mitchell. There was so much to do; Susan hoped the phone would stop ringing. Susan had an Idea of just doing quick text messages to people. Sarah was asked to make colourful posters to put around town talking about the ‘Fix the Drought’ Festival, Ben was asked to make invitations to send out in 12 the mail, Michael was asked to organise media coverage and Nick was asked to collect donations from the community. Later on, Michael checked the Facebook page and there were 164,798 likes and 52 dislikes. It was a crazy amount and Michael screamed. “HOW ARE THERE SO MANY LIKES AND SO MANY COMMENTS?” Susan and George went to Pizzarito Pizza to discuss the possibility of having them provide food for the festival. They nervously went inside and asked the cantankerous man if he would make pizzas for their festival. “What festival?” snapped the shop owner. George took a deep breath and calmly replied, “We are planning a festival to raise money to build a bore to get water back and running into the town.” “That’s crazy! No way am I going to do that! That’s so stupid! Are you expecting me to sell them to you cheaper too?” “Yes” Susan spoke as she looked sideways at George, knowing that their request was useless. Her shoulders dropped at the realisation. “THEN NO WAY! GET OUT OF MY SHOP RIGHT THIS MINUTE! NOW! Oh and my name is John” he John. Susan and George felt like they had been thrown into the middle of the Ocean and 13 washed up again. They had hoped that John would not have been so cantankerous, at least this once. When they told Michael, he was really angry about the very rude Pizza Guy. Chapter 5 Frustrated Susan sat at the kitchen table with Michael, the table covered with the papers planning the Festival. She held Michael’s hand hoping to feel better. 14 “I hoped this Festival would work.” moaned Susan. “It’ll be ok.” Michael encouraged. They sat silently for what felt like a half an hour trying to think of an idea to make things work. Finally Susan got up and moved to the couch to snuggle up with her best friends, Mittens, Cutie and Lunar. She loved her little kittens. Mittens was a bit older and bigger than the other two and was usually first to jump up on her knee. Cutie was the cutest of them all, with his furry body and 15 tiny face. Lunar was black with the most beautiful blue eyes and her purr could be heard over the TV. The three kittens snuggled in as close as they could, knowing she was upset. “Thanks guys, you always make me feel better.” She said softly. Michael came in to the room cautiously. “Come for a walk with Scrappy and me and we can talk about a way of getting this Festival happening.” Michael suggested. “Sure.” She answered happily. 16 Scrappy ran up to her and licked her face. He got excited when he saw the lead, he loved going for walks. They walked around the oval, passed the nursery and through the shopping centre, careful to avoid John’s pizza shop. They talked and talked for about an hour. The site of the dry, dusty oval, bare trees and wilting plants convinced them to keep going. “I’ve got a great idea; maybe we could look at another fast food joint to support us! Maybe a fish and chip shop or something.” Susan said excitedly. “Great idea.” Anything I can do to help?” Michael offered. Chapter 6 There’s a knock on Susan’s door, as she opened it she couldn’t believe her eyes at what she saw. Standing in front of her was a Representative from the Drillsr-Us company. Susan immediately wondered if he had read one of their posters that had been seen around the City, or maybe He saw Michael 17 desperately asking for support on the news last night. The man asked if his company could help by offering to drill the hole for a discounted amount. “We will gather our best people to help to drill the hole to save the country from total dehydration, so water can be raised to feed the plants and people.” Susan was so excited she felt tears of excitement coming into her eyes. “GREAT! Well the festival is tomorrow, so I guess if you set a display up you can help with our fund raiser.” screamed Susan, “Now we won’t need to raise as much money.” As soon as Susan closed the door she ran in to Michael sitting at the kitchen table. She told him about the offer from Drills-R-Us and they both felt relieved. 18 Later that night on the news Michael and the Piranhas did their final promotion to let the public know about the festival that is happening tomorrow to help get water back from under the earth. 19 CHAPTER 7 Children were running around the oval excitedly, dodging the stalls. Some of them had to walk slowly to check things out, as the giant candy floss stick covered their faces. They had heard the Candy-floss Mascot yelling about how it was so healthy and convinced their parents to buy some. Over on the right of the oval, Susan’ gym tent had been constructed. Squeals from delighted little children constantly and rapidly shot out of the tent as they learned to tumble and flip across the gym mats. “COME AND SEE THE AMAZING SUSAN AS SHE TUMBLES AND FLIPS” Spruiked Michael. Across the other side of the festival space the Piranhas were preparing to play their charity match against Alice Springs Scorpions. 20 The clouds darkened you couldn’t see the sun it was so dark. After a hectic game the teams had to play extra time to break the tie. The siren blew and the rain fell, everyone got drenched. The horror house, candy floss, and gym tent got packed up. The field was like a pig sty, 100% mud. 21 22 23 Join Michael and Susan with a football team, the Piranhas, to solve the problem of a drought in Darwin.
