Leadership Opportunities 2013-2014
Volunteering Committee
Volunteering (4 Directors)
Overall, it will be the Director’s responsibility to make sure they are organizing events in
a timely manner so there is an event offered every week. It will be the Director’s job to
plan the event and outline the tasks at hand, or relay information to a Committee for
planning purposes if they choose to make a committee. There are four directors chosen
and each director is in charge of one of three areas of volunteering. Each area requires
time, dedication and passion for volunteering. The areas of volunteering are as follows:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Camp Boggy Creek/Habitat for Humanity/Shepard’s Hope
Geriatrics/Special Needs/Hospital Clinic
Foster Tutoring
Shadowing
These are not the only volunteer opportunities available to Pre-Med AMSA, so we would
love it if our new Volunteer Directors had some innovative ideas for volunteering in the
UCF/Orlando area.
Fundraising Committee
Fundraising (4 Directors)
This directorship is responsible for hosting events to raise funds for distribution to
various clubs/organizations. Fundraising directors play a CRUCIAL role in the success of
Pre-Med AMSA as a whole. Without these people we wouldn’t be able to do half of the
events that we would like to do simply because we wouldn’t have the funding to do so.
Fundraising Directors will be responsible for planning/executing fun and successful
fundraisers not only to make money for our organization, but also to make money so
that we can donate to local places around the UCF area that need financial assistance
(i.e. – Stepping Onward, Rock for Hunger).
Academic Committee
Academics (2 Directors)
The main goal of the academic directors is to be dedicated to promoting academic
excellence amongst Pre-Med AMSA members for matriculation into medical school. We
want to stress the importance of MCAT scores and GPA for applicants, although they
are not the only factors considered, they are critical in ensuring applicants are placed in
higher tiers upon receipt of their primaries. This is typically done through directors
planning events such as workshops, study sessions, tutoring programs, book
exchanges, etc.
Research (2 Directors)
The Research Directors serve as guidance counselors for those interested in becoming
involved in the research aspects of medicine. The Research Directors will be responsible
for providing research opportunities and research workshops to Pre-Med AMSA
members. They will serve as the link between Pre-med AMSA members and Office of
Undergraduate Research (OUR) and they will work closely with the Newsletter Director
to educate members about current research events in the medical world.
Medical Relations (4 Directors)
Medical Relations directors will be responsible for planning AMSA’s trips to visit Medical
School’s around the state of Florida. Trips are taken to give AMSA members an inside
look at the medical schools in Florida, to highlight the medical school environment, give
AMSA members a chance to ask any questions they might have and of course, AMSA
member bonding!
Career Development (2 Directors)
This NEW position will focus on two aspects of career development. One aspect will be
on career development within the career of medicine. This will entail suture clinics,
blood pressure classes, CPR training, ect. The second aspect will focus on developing a
proper resume, help with interview skills, work closely with Career Services and the help
they offer, and work with other directors of the academic committee.
Networking Committee
Newsletter (2 Directors)
Newsletter Directors will be responsible for creating Pre-Med AMSA’s bi-monthly
publication “The Pulse”. They will work closely with their Officer to learn how to
integrate interesting health stories, funny comics, MCAT questions and announcements
into one publication. The directors will learn how to use programs to create these
documents and how to effectively ask for the general membership to get involved in
submitting articles to be published.
Public Relations (4 Directors)
The Public Relations Directors promote the Pre-Med AMSA organization around the UCF
community to gain new membership. The Public Relations directorship is a very
important job! Public Relations directors will be responsible not only for recruiting new
members into our organization, but also for promoting events that we are putting on
throughout the year. These directors should like talking to and getting to know new
people!
Diversity Committee
Gender & Sexuality Chair (2 Directors)
The Gender & Sexuality Chairs are dedicated to assuring equal access to medical care
and equality within medical education and help advocate for patients through curricular
improvement, increased physician education, research and health-related resources.
This is done through a plethora of events such as Love Your Body Week, LGBT Health
Awareness Week and Women’s Health Activism.
Race, Ethnicity and Culture in Health Chair (REACH) ( 2 Directors )
REACH Chairs aim to reduce health disparities between different racial, ethnic and
cultural groups through advocacy, education, and service. They help to strengthen
cultural competency in medical education, promoting diversity of the physician
workforce, and empowering future physicians to actively engage in the political and
social movement towards health equity.
Resources Committee
Operations (2 Directors)
As director of operations you will have many responsibilities including keeping our
website updated for our members, creating documents for upcoming meetings, keeping
our members informed about upcoming events(via Facebook), as well as helping with
any special projects decided by the officers. You will need a working knowledge about
how AMSA works in and out. This position requires dedication and commitment, but it is
a very rewarding one.
Historian (2 Directors)
If you love to take pictures, this is the position for you! You must have your own
camera. We are also looking for someone who has a video recorder to record our
meetings. The two historians will be responsible for making slideshow presentations of
our big events for our meetings.
Health Policy Chair (2 Directors)
This NEW position is looking for two unbiased members to teach our members about
health care policy, the past and future of healthcare and what is currently happening
within the health care system. They will be required to hold events about the topics
stated above. We are looking for neutral information on health care, not a political
battle!
Community and Wellness Committee
Wellness &Student Life Chair (2 Directors)
This chair position aims to provide resources related to student wellness that will allow
physicians-in-training access to information for their personal growth and well-being.
Offering creative outlets where physicians-in-training can express and reflect on their
experiences in academic environments, working on the wards and/or engaging in
community service. This chair will encompass events concerning student health and
awareness.
Community and Environmental Health Chair (2 Directors)
The Community and Environmental Health Chair position will work on improving public
health education at UCF and advancing the health of the community through policy
action. They will be responsible for helping to educate the school and community about
important public health issues and developing/executing local public health projects.
