In this way I should hope to preserve the inestimable personal values of the small college while securing the facilities of a great university.” - James A. I haven't seen Primo at all yet - what does it do? • what's the point? what are the advantages? how will this make our students study/write better and therefore learn more? • What is it, how do you use it best, when is in not appropriate, when is it most appropriate, are there types of searches that do not work, will it replace all of the intelligent databases that we currently use, are we dumbing down all of the research skills that are so helpful in life that we try to teach, are there lessons that can be learned from search engines such as Sherlock - and are these lessons we should be teaching, are these tools going to assist in doing the best research possible, or just in doing a 'good enough' job, can I feel confident in loving this tool? Claremont Colleges Library Staff Education • Perform various searches and tasks in both Summon and Primo – Subject • Title Known title • New title – – – – – – Author Known Author Partial Author Information Known journal article (Summon only) Known book Unknown resource on known paper topic Simple search and advance search • Delivery – Email, Export to Citation manager, Print • Rate your satisfaction • What would make you and a personae very satisfied • Compare and Contrast Primo and Summon Claremont Colleges Library Discussion 1. How well does the relevance ranking algorithm perform on subject(x)? 2. How do we determine that? 3. Is it bad/confusing for the patron to have different subject facet terms appear for each search? Or is it quite good? 4. How well does it work with EndNote, RefWorks (well!), Zotero (not well!) 5. What are the key concepts in Primo? 6. How is Sherlock alike and different from other databases? 7. How will Sherlock help students? Claremont Colleges Library Staff Survey Redux • • • • • Results usually include one or two precise answers and thousands of irrelevant retrievals, or relevant ones way too far down in the list to get to - also - too many newspaper articles come up first. I used Primo last night to look for books by an author. I compared the results to Blais and found out we just didn't have much. Primo was a little easier to use - it accepted the search terms with diacritics. Blais found nothing and suggested "Did you mean" without anything. Sherlock was easy to use and I like how it gathers all of the sources of the library into one list. The only drawback for me was all of the articles that's included but then again if you only want to look at books, there is a link for that. When helping patrons with their research recently, we would do searches in an appropriate database and then discuss findings. After we would do the search in Discovery. The students were very excited at the number of hits, although when they looked closely they noticed that many were duplicates, and many were not exactly right (sort of like a google result!). However these discoveries did not bother them, they were still very happy with the results. Searching for material related to Bram Stoker and his involvement with an occult order called the "Golden Dawn". Found lots of relevant material and found the system much easier to use than searching individual databases. Very satisfied with the results. Claremont Colleges Library Summary 1. Library Staff have moved from firmly against to mostly supportive, with a few notable exceptions. 2. Faculty have voiced approval 3. Students have voiced approval 4. Web site redesign will make search the main focus of the home page. 5. Next: ingest and index business documents. Claremont Colleges Library We are systems integrators…
