Capital
The state capitol is the third capitol building built in the capital
city of Jackson. The first building was finished in 1822, the second
building in 1833, and the current capitol building was finished in 1903.
In 1979-1983, the capitol building happened to have a complete
restoration, which costs $19 million. The renovation remained true to
the original building and strived to maintain the original design when
at all possible. The capitol is 402 feet long and 180 feet to the top of the
dome. The dome interior contains 750 lights. That’s a lot of lights! The
eagle which sits atop the dome is made of solid copper coated or
covered with gold leaf. The eagle is 8 feet high and 15 feet wide. In 1798
Mississippi became a state and since then all the governors portraits are
painted and located on the first floor of the capitol.

science! I think Science Museums are kind of fun if they have

Mississippi Historical Slide
Mississippi joined the Union as the 20th state in 1817 and gets its
name from the Mississippi River. Earlier in time the people who lived in the
area that became Mississippi included the Choctaw, Natchez and Chickasaw
Indian Tribes. Spanish explorers arrived there in 1540. The French started the
first permanent settlement in Mississippi in 1699. During the first half of the
19th century, Mississippi was the top cotton producer in the United States, and
owners of large plantations depended on the labor of slaves. Mississippi left
the Union in 1861 and fought against the U.S.
Army. After the end of slavery, racial discrimination lasted in Mississippi, and
the state was a battleground of the Civil Rights Movement in the 20th Century.
The University of Mississippi
In 1963 the University of Mississippi Medical Center
accomplished the world's first human lung transplant. On January 23, 1964,
Dr. James D. Hardy also performed the first heart transplant. The reason I
chose this University was because it has a good Medical Program. (My
family tells me I should be a Doctor.) University mailing address: University

• The world’s largest shrimp is on Display at the Old Spanish
Fort Museum in Pascagoula.
• Elvis Presley was born in Tupelo, Mississippi, on January 8,
1935. (That’s my b-day too.)
• Mississippi was the first state in the nation to plan a system
of junior colleges
Conclusion
I think Mississippi is an interesting state
because of how much slavery there was. It’s so sad they
had a lot of slavery. They had great cotton fields though.
There are so many different state animals, state drink
and etc. I want to visit the Mississippi River someday,
and the Science Museum they have.
