Exposition

• The main character of this story is Santiago. Santiago is a young boy in his teens.

He is a shepherd and enjoys reading whole he travels with his sheep. He lives in

Andalucía, Spain. The boy has a recurring dream and becomes very concerned about it and its meaning. The dream was basically a little boy playing with

Santiago’s sheep and although Santiago isn’t a big fan of people touching his sheep, he didn’t say anything being that it was a child. After a little while, the little boy comes over to Santiago, takes his hand, and says, "If you come here, you will find your treasure“ then transporting him to the pyramids in Egypt. Just as the boy is showing him exactly where he needs to go, he wakes up. In order to find out what this means, he goes to the Gypsy woman because he heard that she interprets dreams. The boy also heard that she kidnaps children and takes them as slaves so he was hesitant to anything she tried to do. For the price of 1/10 th of his increase, she says he must go to the pyramids in search of his treasure. Santiago keeps on going and comes to meet an old man. The old man wants to talk to the boy even though he can tell that Santiago is not at all interested. They talk for a while and Santiago's view on the man changed as they continued to talk about each other and what's going on. The man turned out to be the King of Salem that had a special ability to read minds so he knew all about Santiago's dream. The King told the boy he had found his Personal Legend or his destiny and he must follow it.

Conflict

• The first real conflict that came along in the story was when

Santiago got robbed. The boy had just reached Africa and was very unfamiliar with the people, the place, and their customs. There was a man there that noticed Santiago’s confusion and decided to help. They went into a bar where

Santiago explained why he was there when somebody who worked there came over frantically but he was speaking in a language that Santiago didn’t understand. The man said that they would need a camel for them to reach their destination so he took some of the boys money to get it.

Time passed and he sees no camel nor man. Santiago realizes that he had just been robbed. As a result of this robbery, Santiago had to sell some of his sheep and get some money in order to still make it across the desert.

Climax

• I believe that the climax is when Santiago actually reaches the

Oasis, which is a place in the middle of the desert where water, shelter, and other supplies are provided for anyone who needed it.

In order to reach the Oasis, he had to work to get his money back, buy a camel, and then join a caravan to cross with. In the caravan, the boy met a man. This man had a special reasoning for crossing the desert which is to find the alchemist. When they finally reached the Oasis, they went on a mission together to find the alchemist.

Suddenly, Santiago was love struck. He had met the love of his life and he knew it for sure. Her name was Fatima and she lived there at the Oasis. He went and asked her if she knew that alchemist mainly for the opportunity to talk to the lovely girl. After a lot of searching and asking, Santiago finally found the alchemist. They had a conversation about his Personal Legend and he also introduced him to the language of the world.

Resolution/Climax

• Santiago finds the place that he saw in his dream and begins to dig for it. These men come along and start beating the life out of the boy. Even after being brutally beat, he still got back up to continue digging for the treasure he had traveled a long way for. The men were startled by Santiago’s persistence to keep going and stood to observe him. They also became concerned when he kept digging and no kind of treasure came out so they asked him about it. The boy replied by telling him his journey and all he’s gone through so far. One man said that he had the same dream and the treasure turned out to be in an old, abandoned church with a sycamore tree growing through it. Santiago smiled because he recognized the place he was talking about; it was where he had the dream in the first place. He went on his way back to where he began. Santiago finally reached there and began to dig for his treasure when he finally hit something. He took it out to find a chest of gold and an assortment of gems. He took out a share to bring to the gypsy woman that he promised in the beginning. After he did that, Santiago knew he had to go back for his love.

• In the end, Santiago fulfilled his personal legend. He traveled like he always planned to and he found his treasure and his true love along the. The boy had a lot of helped and developed many skills especially love.
