Evolving Authorities in Libraries and Archives Utah Library Association 26 April 2012 Robert L. Maxwell Chair, Special Collections and Formats Catalog Department, Brigham Young University RDA • RDA = Resource Description and Access, published June 2010 • Available online: http://www.rdatoolkit.org/ – license model, price depends on number of users • Available in print: http://www.alastore.ala.org/ – purchase price: $150 • AACR2 is no longer being developed RDA “Day One” • What does “implementation” mean? • “Day One” = March 31, 2013 – After “day one,” AACR2 authority records may no longer be entered in the LC/NACO Authority File (authorities.loc.gov) – No similar “day one” for bibliographic records – “Day one” does not mean that you can’t do RDA cataloging before March 31, 2013. To the contrary ... RDA and Authorities • RDA allows for a much more robust authority record than AACR2 did. • RDA recognizes the “family” entity • RDA paves the way for a linked data structure in the database (entity-relationship) More Robust Authority Records • New Elements – Discrete elements for attributes of entities • • • • • • • Dates Gender Places associated with the entity Language of the entity Affiliations/Associations of the entity Profession/Occupation/Field of activity Work/Expression related attributes Dates - 046 field • No Indicators • Subfields – ‡ f - Birth date (NR) – ‡ g - Death date (NR) – ‡ k - Beginning or single date created (NR) – ‡ l - Ending date created (NR) – ‡ s - Start period (NR) – ‡ t - End period (NR) Dates: Description of a Person 046 ‡f 17310602 ‡g 18020522 040 ‡a DLC ‡b eng ‡c DLC ‡d DLC ‡d PPi-MA ‡d UPB ‡e rda 100 1 ‡a Washington, Martha, ‡d 1731-1802 370 ‡a New Kent County, Va. ‡b Mount Vernon, Va. 375 ‡a female 377 ‡a eng 400 1 ‡a Dandridge, Martha, ‡d 1731-1802 400 1 ‡a Custis, Martha, ‡d 1731-1802 670 ‡a Martha Washington’s benediction, [1948], ©1948 670 ‡a Britannica online, 9 August 2011 ‡b (Martha Washington, née Martha Dandridge, also called Martha Custis (1749-1759), born June 2, 1731, New Kent County, Virginia; died May 22, 1802, Mount Vernon, Virginia; American first lady and wife of George Washington) Dates: Description of a Person 046 ‡f 1976~ ‡g 2003-12-12 ‡2 edtf 100 0 ‡a Keiko, ‡d approximately 1976-2003 373 ‡a Marineland 374 ‡a Actor 375 ‡a male 670 ‡a Free Willy, 1993: ‡b credits (Keiko as Willy) 670 ‡a Wikipedia, 3 August 2011 ‡b (Keiko; born approximately 1976, died December 12, 2003; male orca actor who starred in the film Free Willy; captured near Iceland in 1979, later sold to Marineland in Ontario; performed in parks in North America) Dates: Description of a Person 010 ‡a n 50035187 046 ‡f 19250527 ‡g 20081026 100 1 ‡a Hillerman, Tony 370 ‡a Sacred Heart, Okla. ‡e Albuquerque, N.M. 374 ‡a Author ‡a Journalist ‡a Educator 375 ‡a male 377 ‡a eng 400 1 ‡a Hillerman, Anthony Grove 670 ‡a Kilroy was there, 2004: ‡b title page (Tony Hillerman) 670 ‡a New York times, via WWW, October 27, 2008 ‡b (Tony Hillerman; born Anthony Grove Hillerman, May 27, 1925, Sacred Heart, Okla.; died Sunday [October 26, 2008], Albuquerque, aged 83; his lyrical, authentic, and compelling mystery novels set among the Navajos of the Southwest blazed innovative trails in the American detective story) Dates: Description of a Family 046 ‡s 1944 100 3 ‡a Osmond (Family : ‡d 1944- : ‡g Osmond, Olive, 1925-2004) 376 ‡a Family ‡b Osmond, Olive, 1925-2004 ‡b Osmond, George, 1917-2007 400 3 ‡a Osmond (Family : ‡d 1944- : ‡g Osmond, George, 1917-2007) 500 1 ‡w r ‡i Progenitor: ‡a Osmond, Olive, ‡d 1925-2004 500 1 ‡w r ‡i Progenitor: ‡a Osmond, George, ‡d 1917-2007 667 ‡a SUBJECT USAGE: This heading is not valid for use as a subject; use a family name heading from LCSH. 670 ‡a Osmond family blog, 28 September 2011 ‡b (first organized by Alan Osmond, but contributed to by all members of the Osmond family) 670 ‡a Wikipedia, 28 September 2011 ‡b (The Osmonds, American family musical group; members of the family include descendants of Olive Osmond (1924-2004) and George Osmond (1917-2007); members perform in singing groups including The Osmonds; Donny & Marie; and The Osmonds—The Second Generation) 670 ‡a FamilySearch, 28 September 2011 ‡b (Olive & George Osmond, married 1 December 1944 in Salt Lake City, Utah) 678 ‡a Utah family prominent in the entertainment business, including the singing groups The Osmonds; Donny & Marie; and The Osmonds—The Second Generation.
