The Veldt
Business Letter Writing Assignment
After discussing the theme of Ray Bradbury’s story, The Veldt you are now going to
apply your knowledge of the story. Read the following directions closely and use the
attached format for a business letter to help you write this assignment. The criteria for
this assignment is also attached.
Imagine that you are Wendy and Peter’s grandparents. Following the untimely death
of their parents in the nursery you now have responsibility for the children and have
inherited the house and the nursery. Write a complaint letter to the makers of the
nursery. Your letter needs to use correct business letter format (see attatched example).
You will need to write three paragraphs in the body of your letter.
 In the first paragraph you will need to introduce the problem and explain what
was promised when the parents initially bought the nursery for the children.
 In the second paragraph explain what went wrong and what the results were.
 In the third paragraph suggest ways in which you might be compensated for the
loss of your relatives.
In all of the paragraphs you will need to use specific details and examples from the
story.

Dear Mr./Ms. Full Name:
You do not want to indent when you are using this format. This is the best format
to use when you are writing a persuasive letter. You want to introduce yourself
and the topic you are writing about to the reader. Remember that the first rule
of writing is to know your audience. In a persuasive letter, you state your opinion
or your feelings about something that is important to you after you have
introduced yourself.
You must sound as professional and passionate as possible. You do not want to
belittle the reader or they will not finish reading your letter. Your letter needs to
have the facts, reasons, and examples to support your position. Address issues
that your reader may have in their argument.
In a second paragraph, you must have solutions. Without solutions, you are only
complaining. Offer assistance in solving the problem. Remind the reader where
they can contact you.
Sincerely yours,
Any Student
