“The Melvil Dewey Library provides students with
the opportunity to understand social
responsibility by guiding them to appropriate
behavior in a library environment.”

Whatchagonnado?
• Date: Fri, 3 Nov 2006
Folks, I'm trying to find any policies online
posted by Academic/College libraries on use of
or blocking of sites like MySpace, Friendster,
Facebook, and the like. Our library has no
policy currently and we're seriously considering
the impact the use of such sites is having on our
students' ability to use the computers in the
library for academic work. Any assistance would
be greatly appreciated. I'm currently looking on
the ACRL website as well as tracking down a
few websites my manager has found.

Technology - School Library 2.0
“Redefining the school library is not a response to some
inherent failure on the part of the institution. It's an
opportunity for library professionals to engage in some
exciting activities that will enable our institutions to
remain effective in the midst of fast-moving technological
change. It was school libraries, in fact, that led the way in
the first wave that brought computers and then the
Internet into our classrooms. This is about adapting,
once again, to a new, perhaps even more compelling
digital revolution, in which powerful new ideas are
enhancing the way in which we function in an electronic
information environment.” SLJ, May 2006 p50.

Teaching as a subversive activity
(Postman & Weingartner)
• avoid telling students what they "ought to know";
• talk to students mostly by questioning, and especially by
asking divergent questions;
• do not accept short, simple answers to questions;
• encourage students to interact directly with one another,
and avoid judging what is said in student interactions;
• do not summarize students' discussion;
• do not plan the exact direction of their lessons in
advance; allow it to develop in response to students'
interests;
• pose problems to students;
• gauge student success by change in students' inquiry
behaviors (with the above characteristics of "good
learners" as a goal).

Be respectful of people, the materials and the facility.
Follow the guidelines in the Student Handbook.
Use a very quiet voice.
Music listening devices are not allowed as per the student handbook.
Bottled water is allowed if it is capped and kept on the floor. No other food or drink is
permitted in the library.
Have a pass that indicates the time you should be arriving at the library. If you need
to stop at your locker or use the bathroom, do so before coming here.
Bathroom privileges limited to 5 minutes. Ask for pass and sign in and out at the
desk.
Keep track of your backpack and other possessions.
Use computers responsibly according to the Acceptable Use Policy.
Give priority for computer use to students in the library with a class.
Return borrowed materials on time. See details of the borrowing policy posted
throughout the library. Prolonged overdues can result in loss of computer privileges
and withholding of schedules.
