THE GREEK WORLD, 500 – 440 BC: LESSON PLANS

June 10 th :

Topic: The Battle of Marathon 490BC

Class work: Before tea we did an assessment Task. After tea we read Ehrenberg’s account of the Battle of Marathon and had a look at a PowerPoint presentation on the same topic. Homework: Do questions 1, 6, 8, 12, 13, 15, 18-27, 29 and 30 from the Ehrenberg handout.

June 17 th :

Topic: The interwar period and the Battle of Artemesium.

Class work: We went over the answers to the Battle of Marathon, and then read the section from Bradley on the interwar period and Greek/Persian preparations for war. Students then answered selected questions. We then read an excerpt from the Troezen Inscription and discussed the significance of it for Thermopylae. Finally we looked at the Battle of

Artemesium.

Homework: Answer all questions on the Battle of Artemesium for next week.

Next Week: The Battle of Thermopylae. I’ll also hand out some sheets for Assessment Task 3.

June 24 th :

Topic: The Battle of the Thermopylae

Class work: We went over the answers to Artemesium, and then read through the account of the Battle of Thermopylae in Bury & Meiggs. We then watched the documentary Last

Stand of the 300.

Homework: Complete questions on the Battle of Thermopylae.

Please note: I have uploaded a PowerPoint on Religion for the Cities of Vesuvius topic if you are interested. Have a look; it may be good for revision.

July 22 nd

Topic: Battle of Salamis and Plataea

Class work: We went through worksheets and sources on these two battles. Questions were set for both.

Homework: Complete questions on Battle of Plataea for next week. We’ll then do Mycale and the serpent column. Make sure you bring the handout “The rise to power of Athens –

478-445BC” and the large maps for next week. I also handed out worksheets for Agrippina to help you with the assessment in week 5.

July 29 th

Topic: The Persian Wars and Delian league

Class work: We went over the battles and did a battle strategy summary gird (see wiki link).

Then we did an outline for an essay (see wiki link). Finally we started the Delian League.

Homework: Question 2, 3b-d on the Delian League handout (questions at end)

I have also uploaded the questions for the Greek World from a past paper.

August 5 th

Topic: The Delian League.

Class work: We completed work on the Delian League, and did all questions on the handout.

At the end we started Agrippina the Younger.

Remember: There is an assessment Task in Week 5.

Remember also: The Week 6 lesson will be WEDNESDAY 25th August due to HSC Trials starting Friday. Those who come get a Trial help sheet!
