Indicate the clientele for whom this course is designed. Is the course for general education only, or
does it fulfill general education and other program needs for this or another department? Obtain
signatures from any affected departments.
It is a general education course for any student who may become or already is a parent. Just as every
student should take a class on how to learn how to drive, every student should take this course to learn how to be
a parent! It also fulfills a need in our Birth-3rd grade teaching license/Major in the Child and Family Studies
Department. This course has typically "hooked" students into our Child and Family Studies minor or major.
9.
Indicate any changes that must be made in offerings or resources in your department or other
departments by offering this course.

Courses designated as General Education are included in the assessment plan for the Goal Area(s)
for which they are approved. Courses for which assessment is not included in the annual GE
assessment report for two years will be removed from the General Education Program.
The Requesting Unit understands and recognizes the above conditions.
12.
Provide a concise explanation of how the following goal is a “significant focus” of the proposed course.
Goal Area 5: History and the Social & Behavioral Sciences
Develop understanding of human societies and behaviors, and of the concepts, theories, and methods of
history and the social sciences.
Social and Behavioral Sciences explore the activities and interactions of people through observations and
study. These are the fields which investigate different aspects of human society. CFS 220: Parent-Child Relations,
deals with the rights and duties of parents in socializing their children to be able to be a productive member of
society. It is a course to educate parents (or parents to be) by studying sytematic processes of parenting. This class
also investigates the decision processes and communication strategies within and between members of families.
CFS 220 helps students understand the factors that make each family unique through the study of their own
families of origin. Research shows we tend to parent children the way we were parented. In this class, students
examine how they were parented (democratic, authoritarian, permissive) and begin to understand the implications
of how this will effect their behavior in future jobs. Some students have not lived in "healthy" families and need
to understand how to create a healthy environment in which to raise children. As we develop an understanding of
different family structures and how children are socialized differently, we begin to develop a deeper
understanding of society in general. Students are asked to analyze parent behavior across cultures and in
America. They are asked to develop explanations for and explore solutions to historical and contemporary
parenting issues. They reflect upon themselves in relation to their own family and how they were parented.
Finally, they apply and critique alternative parenting systems in reference to their own and their classmates'
family systems.
13. In order for a course to be designated as fulfilling Goal Area 5, it must address at least 4 of the 5 student learning
outcomes (SLOs) below. Check the SLOs below that are focused on in the proposed general education course.
1. Describe or use the methods and data by which historians, social scientists, or behavioral scientists investigate
human conditions.

3. Develop explanations for and explore solutions to historical or contemporary social problems.
4. Reflect upon themselves in relation to family, communities, society, culture, and/or their histories.
5. Apply and critique alternative explanatory systems or theories about human societies and behaviors.
14.
Discuss how each Student Learning Outcome checked above is achieved in this course. (Note: Although
descriptions of typical assignments or types of assignments may be part of this discussion, it is not
