College and University News:
 CSU Council for Emergency Management and Homeland Security (CEMHS) Update:
Happy Friday CEMHS Colleagues,
Hope that you are doing great! Just two quick things FYI:
1. The California EM-HS Education and Training Strategic Initiative is off to the publisher on Monday.
Yay! It has been a tough few days finishing up the writing and putting everything together but it looks
great! If you would like a sneak preview of Strategic Initiative sections in advance of publication, please
check our blog at http://cemhs.blogspot.com/ over the next week or so! Likely the first post will be the
very exciting Table of Contents (which runs over 3 pages!)
2. Please see the attached meeting (contact Keith for agenda) CEMHS Cybersecurity Workgroup
Meeting Agenda for our meetings at San Jose State University (The Mineta Transportation Institute) on
6/24/13 from 9:30-2:30 and San Diego State University (The Viz Center) on 6/26/13 from 9:30-2:30.
Once again, I would like to thank Frannie Edwards (SJSU) and Eric Frost (SDSU) for hosting these
meetings.
In a nut shell, at these meetings, we will be providing an update on CEMHS, Public-Private Partnership
Development; Cyber-Security Model Curriculum Design (graduate and under-graduate); Program
Development and Implementation; Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM); and
grant proposal/research initiatives discussion on a proposed $5-10 million dollar multi-campus
consortium based project. Interested K-12, Community Colleges, CSU, UC, and private institution
partners should let me know of their interest in working with us on proposal development/submission.
Please RSVP to the Cyber-Security Workgroup Meeting by next Wednesday June 19th by the close of
business.
Thanks a bunch and have a wonderful weekend!
Best wishes, Keith

 Red Rocks Community College
Emergency Management & Planning Degree and Certificate Programs
Fall Semester Starts on August 19th 2013
Through Red Rocks Community College, students can earn an Associate of Applied Science Degree or a
Certificate in Emergency Management Planning. All courses are offered ONLINE. To complete our
Associate of Applied Science Degree in Emergency Management and Planning requires the completion
of 60 credit hours of courses, including 15 hours of General Education courses, 15 hours of Electives
and 30 credit hours (ten courses) of core EMP courses.
The Red Rocks fall semester starts on August 19, 2013. This fall we will be offering EMP 101, EMP
106, EMP 109, EMP 247, EMP 244, and EMP 250. More detailed information about our program is
available at: http://www.rrcc.edu/catalogs/sheets/EmergencyManagementAndPlanning.pdf
Students can take a course without the need for long distance travel and can set their own schedule.
Since ONLINE courses don't have a set classroom time, students can participate at any hour.... now the
school is coming to the student, saving time and money. Prospective students can apply to Red Rocks
and register for classes totally ONLINE at http://www.rrcc.edu/.
Completed courses from other colleges or accredited institutions, which correspond to our EMP course
requirements, can be transferred to Red Rocks, at no cost, after submitted transcripts are reviewed for
applicability toward our EMP Program. When requesting credit for courses for which you have
certificates or are from non-accredited institutions such as FEMA, you need to go through what we call
our "Credit for Prior Learning Program". At least 15 hours (5 EMP courses) must be taken through Red
Rocks.
This program was started in 1999 and is recognized by FEMA as one of the pioneering national
ONLINE Emergency Management programs and is supported by the Colorado Office of Emergency
Management. Floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, train wrecks, terrorist attacks and hazardous chemical
spills are examples of emergencies in which life and property are endangered. The EM professional’s
ability to perform essential work in a disaster requires skills in emergency operations and management.
How well a community or an organization prepares for and deals with these and other kinds of disasters
can affect not only their economic viability but people’s lives.
