The essential meaning of the word
corresponds to our modern term “space,”
such as when we speak of the universe as a
universe of space and time.
Earth = Erets
The earth at this point had no form to it, so
this must refer to the creation of the basic
elements of matter which were subsequently
organized into the structured earth and
later into other material bodies, i.e. stars
and planets.
