Fladumy Orelus
"Adversity makes you stronger" uttered Williams Edwards. In translation even though you go through many obstacles in life don't give
up because you'll become stronger and be able to deal with life. So when you ask the question why I represent a successful black
male, I can tell you why, I never give up, I face all problems head on, I don't fall under peer pressure, I respect my parents, I don't
smoke, I don't drink, I don't follow my peers in any disastrous behavior, and I am a very hard working person. Therefore I must go to
college and become the future brain sergeant that I always wanted to be, not only because of the success but to make my parents
proud and to set an example for the kids back home, to show them even though we were born in a place like Belle Glade and despite
our skin color, we can still be successful. That’s why my motivation is unbreakable and I try my hardest to stand out from the crowd
by participating in many academic programs and other activities: Brain Bowl Math division, Academic Games, HOSA, Student Council,
and NAACP youth division, Trendsetters (reading mentor program) and Red Cross. Those don't only stimulate my mind but also helps
members in my community. Therefore I will give my fullest to excel in school and in life. This will begin with graduating from
high school and hopefully attending the University of Florida and ride that great escalade to success!
To start off with, I represent the successful black male because I’m in the top ten percent of my class and I continuously strive to achieve
greater heights. Outside of school, I read books, conserve my time and also, manage to stay out of trouble in a small busy city
surrounded by a dangerous, troubled environment. My interest varies in the study of Business and the Military. I'm a participating
member of the football team and I'm also a basketball player and a track and field participant. Also, I'm an honor student throughout 4
years of high school while taking on challenges such as honor and current advancement placement classes. Some characteristics of
potential role are bravery, competitiveness and also, a positive attitude just to name a few. My career goals is to either pursue a
Business degree at the University of Florida or go to the Military and complete at least 20 years of service and then retire.
As my fourth grade teacher once told me, "There are three ingredients in the good life: learning, earning, and yearning." I honestly did not
comprehend it at that age but now. I realize what she meant. It means to have a successful, good life you have to learn as much as you
can, earn what you deserve through hard work, and yearn to learn and earn more. From the moment I came into this world and was
given a name, I have been an epitome of a successful black male. My mom and her boyfriend at the time chose my name, Fladumy,
because it came from a rich, successful man in Haiti and they felt as if I would amount to greatness. The first few years were rough on me
and my mother, her boyfriend had left, and my father wasn't around much, so she had to raise me on her own. I was always in trouble at
school, at the babysitter’s houses, in stores and even at home. At one point, the pressure and stress of being a single mother raising a five
year old boy caused my mother to crack so she called my father and told him to come get me from her as soon as possible. Since then, I
have been living under the strict guidance of my father and stepmother, and my two caring half- brothers. Thanks to them I am an
intelligent young man who learns from his mistakes to improve his life and the lives of those around him. I have been studying the area of
engineering because I love working with my hands to create, fix, and modify objects. While studying engineering in high school, I have learned
what circuits are and how to wire them, make blueprints for houses, create marble sorters, and a plethora of other interesting devices.
Every year I participate in the drama club at my school and as of right now, I am the president of the club. I volunteer at the local Catholic
Church in my town any time I have free time. I help my church with kid programs, fixing broken televisions and games, moving heavy
objects, cleaning the place up, painting, and regulating the activities, j am a role model at my church always trying to do the right thing
because the kids are also watching what I do and say, I do my best to keep them motivated about going to school and giving it there all
so that they can go to college, and they come to me for advice and I'm there for them to listen to their problems and advise them. I
hope and plan to attend University of South Florida to major in computer/software engineering and earn a minor in dramatic arts. I still
have a long ways to go before I reach all my goals in life and I will learn as much as I can, earn what I deserve, and yearn to learn, earn,
and reach my goals.

Learning about the natural world around me has always been a passion of mine. From a young age my mind was focused on the
natural phenomena in my own backyard, particularly biology and chemistry. Iconic scientific figures such as Bill Nye and Jeff
Corwin inspired me to continue my dreams of one day becoming a scientist so I could build a better tomorrow. As my grade
level grew so did my interest in the sciences, classes in high school such as earth/space science, biology, and chemistry
broadened my horizons on the intricacies and potential a scientific mind could provide. Programs such as the Biotechnology
Academy made spectacular connections between science and technology while clubs like SECME blew my mind away with upclose and tangible experiments that not only provided a scientific lesson but a way to interact and have fun with my peers who
share the same interests. There is nothing quite like the rush of seeing your own, handmade water bottle rocket shoot up into
the blue sky and letting the beauty of science take its course.
Seminole Ridge High School
Brian Bartels
As a black male student at Seminole Ridge High School, I feel that it is important for members of each ethnic race to be
represented so that they may be a model to others of their race, and provide hope and encouragement to those with limited
options. I try always to be the best that I can be, and academic are where I always put my focus in. I am particularly interested
in the sciences, seeing that it is all around us and is very broad. I am currently in my fourth and final year of the Biotechnology
Academy at Seminole Ridge. Here I enjoy using state-of-the-art technology to manipulate and understand biologically
substances. Due to the wide variety and level of science course Seminole Ridge has to offer I have been able to courses such as
zoology honors, AP Chemistry, AP Biology, and Earth/Space Science.
Outside of the classroom however, I participate in many extracurricular activities. I am a member of the National Honor Society,
the Science National Honor Science, and the engineering club SECME, holding an officer position in each club. While in these
societies and clubs I am able to fully use my potential to help the community. Through NHS, I have worked with sick children
and their families at Quantum House and St. Mary’s Hospital, and even teaching elementary school children the fundamentals
and construction of rocketry through SECME’s educational design seminars.
I am currently in the top 10% with a rank of 44 according to junior year. However I expect my rank to rise due to my
academically rigorous schedule this year. My cumulative GPA is an HPA of 4.5. I plan on graduating from Seminole Ridge and
going on to attend the University of Florida. While there I want to earn my B.S. in zoology and minor in Chemistry. After that I
wish to go to UF’s Veterinary Medicine College where I would earn my D.M.V. (Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine) and open my
own practice here in the state of Florida. I hope my actions truly do speak louder than words and that the steps I have taken to
become a successful black male high school students will inspire others to build a better tomorrow for themselves and society.

Community High School is a total school of choice that attracts the best students of Palm Beach County to any one of our four
magnet programs. Will ranks 1,054 among 12,143 Palm Beach County seniors, which puts him in the top eight percent of the
Palm Beach school district. He plans to major in mechanical engineering and fulfill his dream of becoming a mechanical

Jordan Sanches
When I started working at Suncoast High School during Will’s ninth grade year, I remember him as a shy young man who kept to
himself but since then, I have witnessed his transformation to a confident and respectfully assertive young man. This past
summer, Will was a Summer Academy for Math and Science (SAMS) participant for six weeks at Carnegie Mellon where he
undertook college preparatory and engineering classes. He has earned awards as a participant in Academic Games, earning the
County Top 5 Individual Award in 2005-2008, and the County Division Top 5 Individual Award in 2010, as well as serving on the
First Place team in county competition in 2005-2008 and the County Division First Place Team in 2010. Will is a young man who
does not expend all of his energy on only academics. He has a Black Belt in the martial art of Tae Kwon Do. He is active in
Suncoast’s Lacrosse Team and Robotics Club. He is a talented and culturally aware student who has been involved as a theater
youth camp counselor. Will’s theater résumé includes being a member of the Saturday’s Actor Workshop since 2006,
volunteering at the summer actor’s workshop with Adam Crowe at the Delray Beach Playhouse the past two years, and serving
as a Technical Member of a production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Delray Beach Playhouse in 2008. I admire Will Milner’s
perseverance to attend Suncoast Community High School. Since his 9th grade year, Will has maintained a three-hour train ride
commute in order to attend our school. He has successfully balanced this commute with his rigorous academic and
extracurricular schedules.
Most students at Suncoast Community High School are challenged to the maximum with the International Baccalaureate
Program (IB) or our unique Mathematics, Science, and Engineering (MSE) magnet. Jordan is doing what seems humanly
impossible; he is pursuing both! He is meeting the challenge of the double magnet programs head on! Jordan’s commitment
to his education is evident by his 3.9818 GPA and 5.0977 HPA. His class rank is 7 out of 317. This year he has been selected as
both a National Merit and National Achievement Semi-finalist. Please consider that out of 12,143 seniors in the Palm Beach
County School District, the 11th largest school district in the nation, Jordan is ranked number 25. The county ranking
demonstrates the seriousness of this young man.
What makes Jordan’s academic accomplishments even more impressive is when you also consider his involvement in clubs and
activities. Jordan has participated in the Science, Engineering, Communications, and Mathematics Excellence Program (SECME)
since ninth grade. He is also a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc.’s Men of Tomorrow (MOT) Youth Group. MOT is a
youth group for African American males in grades 9-12; they take part in activities to enrich the community and the lives of the
group’s members. For the past three years, he has been a member of the National Achievers’ Society (NAS), which is under the
auspices of the Urban League of Palm Beach County. NAS is heavily focused on both academic success and community service.
Jordan has earned 552 community service hours. In 2007, at the inception of the group, he served a two-year term as
Treasurer. He is now President of the organization and will serve as the Captain of this group’s Brain Bowl at its annual
conference. He is also with the Young Democrats of America, National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS), National Honor
Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and the Varsity Lacrosse Team. Jordan desires to pursue a career in the area of mechanical or
aerospace engineering at one of the following five schools which he wishes to attend: Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT), Harvard, Carnegie Mellon, or Georgia Tech. Stanford, however, is his first choice. To do all that he does, and
at the high level of quality he does it, is the sign of a mature and organized young man. Jordan has selflessly given of himself on
many different fronts and has earned respect from his family, classmates and faculty.
