Subject: Thesis Student News
Apologies for the delay in sending out this memo. I have been in China at the China
Scholarship Council recruitment fairs. It is encouraging to meet so many students who are interested in completing a PhD at the University of Canterbury.
I draw your attention to the long list of scholarships at the end of this memo – these are scholarships that have closing dates in the remainder of 2015. I encourage you to have a look through the list and see whether there are any that you could apply for – in most cases the application form does not tak long to complete!

1.
For those who have applied to graduate at one of the December graduation ceremonies :
(i) In order to be eligible to graduate at the December ceremonies your examination process must be completed by November 20 th . For PhD students this means all amendments post-oral need to have been completed and approved and the final version of the thesis deposited in university library by November 20 th
. For masters students this means that the final grade for the thesis and the final degree classification have to have been determined and the final version of the thesis deposited in the university library by November 20th.
(ii) I would be grateful if you could send me an email letting me know how to pronounce your name correctly. If you could attach a sound file to the email that would be even better.
The annual thesis student conference is to be held on Thursday November 19 th
. All thesis/dissertation students are invited to participate – the format will be like a typical conference with oral presentations of ~15 minutes followed by questions. Feedback will be provided by academic judges and there will be PRIZES. It is a great way to get confident at giving presentations and to meet other students and hear about their research.
The event is being organized by PGSA, UCSA and myself and will also be open to thesis students from Lincoln University and from the Otago University Christchurch School of
Medicine.
To submit an abstract complete the form here or here and return as an email attachment to showcase@canterbury.ac.nz
by November 6 th
.
Please ensure that you always use the most up-to-date version of any form that needs to be submitted to the PG Office. The most recent versions can be downloaded from the PG website: http://www.canterbury.ac.nz/postgrad/Forms/Forms_for_PhD.shtml
