Rev. Nicolas Ipisa and his wife Esther, had the dream of planting a church in the heart of Hela Province. With the help of a layman, Simon Kunini, they began searching for that place where the Lord was leading them. The land has been located, a church erected, and God is truly at work. The very afternoon after this story was published, an urgent request for prayer was received from the team in Hela Province. At approximately 6:30pm on December 19th, the layman who had been so instrumental in getting the church established, Simon Kunini, died suddenly. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you to the land I swore with uplifted hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. I will 5 give it to you as a possession. I am the LORD.’” Hebrews 1(NIV) 1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 6 Jesus: God Himself What does it mean to say Jesus is “Son”, “Heir” and Creator? What does it mean to say Jesus is the “Radiance” and the “Exact Representation” of God? What does it mean to say Jesus is “Sustainer”? What is the significance of Jesus “sitting down” after He provided “purification”? 7 Hebrews 1(NIV) 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him.” 7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels spirits, and his servants flames of fire.” 8 Jesus: Superior to Angels Why do you think it was important for the author of Hebrews to demonstrate that Jesus is superior to angels? What is the basis for that superiority? Do you think that angels are active today? If so, what is their role? 9 Hebrews 1 (NIV) 8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.” 10 He also says, “In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” 13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? 10 Jesus: Eternal Son Why do you think the author of Hebrews spent the effort to demonstrate Jesus’ superiority to angels.? Why do you think the author emphasized the transient nature of angels? Does this passage give you greater insight into the role of angels? 11 Next Week Unit 2: Hebrews: The Superior Sacrifice Lesson 2: Defeater of Death Hebrews 2:5-18 12 SundayTeacher.com Lesson Password: Priest Illustrated Bible Life Password: Rest The Eurasia Regional Office is inviting Nazarenes across the Eurasia Region to link hearts with our brothers and sisters in the Africa Region by joining them in prayer and fasting for the people suffering from the Ebola virus outbreak in Western Africa, for those who are sick, those who have lost loved ones, communities impacted negatively by quarantine, fear, loss of producers and earners, and for those brave medical workers treating the sick.
