Lyon County School District Mission Statement:
The Lyon County Board of School Trustees, Administrators, Teachers, and
School Staff will assure that every student can learn and achieve the skills
necessary to be proficient in academic, vocational and social disciplines. Public
education is a collaborative effort between the Lyon County School District and
parents/guardians as stakeholders to teach the skills that are essential for every
student to be a life-long learner and productive citizen in our ever changing and
diverse society.
What is Parent University?
Parent University is an opportunity for parents and guardians to hone
their skills as they work in life's most important and demanding role-parenting. The program offers parents and guardians information that
helps them support their children at home. The Parent University
sessions focus on child development, what children are learning in
schools, advocacy, parent leadership and effective strategies that support
learning at home.
In our sessions we recognize that:
• Parents are Teachers – These sessions provide a clearer understanding
of how children grow and learn.
• Parents are Advocates – These sessions help build the capacity to
advocate for children, understand the Common Core State Standards
and expectations for learning.
• Parents are Leaders – These sessions provide the opportunity to
develop the skills necessary to assume leadership roles in schools and
the community.
• Parents are Learners – These sessions provide the opportunity to build
upon skills for personal and professional growth.
How does Parent University work?
Parent University is free for all Fernley community members. Parent
University offers three, 25-minute learning sessions in one evening.
