Because the Lions allowed only 52 sacks, we assumed Culpepper earned his million bucks. As it turns out, the sacks factor wasn’t based on allowing fewer sacks. As Tom Kowalski of Mlive.com reports (and as we’ve separately confirmed), the trigger was satisfied only if the Lions didn’t finish in the bottom five in the league in sacks allowed. Brian McIntyre, MacsFootballBlog.com: Calvin Johnson reached a contractual incentive in 2010 that reduced his 2011 base salary by $1,575,482. The same incentive increased his 2012 salary by the same amount, and is now scheduled to earn $14 million in the final season of his contract. Mike Florio, PFT: It’s an eight-year, $131.95 million contract. Until, however, the team chooses to fully guarantee $3.5 million in base salary in 2018 and $3.5 million in base salary in 2019, the last two years will void, making it a six-year, $96.7 million deal. Before a non-guaranteed option bonus of $20 million is exercised in 2013, the deal has $48.75 million in fully guaranteed money (not including a $4.5 million roster bonus Johnson already has earned). After the option is exercised (and including the $20 million option bonus), $37.25 million is fully guaranteed. The $60 million in guaranteed money arises from a $16 million signing bonus, a fully-guaranteed base salary of $1.25 million, the $20 million non-guaranteed option bonus, and another $22.5 million in fully-guaranteed base salary that becomes guaranteed for injury only after the option bonus is paid. Though not guaranteed, the option bonus undoubtedly will be paid, because until the option is paid the deal has $31.5 million in fully-guaranteed base salaries… The cap number jumps to $19.7 million in 2015 and to $23.15 million in 2016. It drops to $20.5 million in 2017. Brian McIntyre, Yahoo Sports: the Lions dropped Johnson's base salary down to $715,000, the league minimum for a player with six accrued seasons, and converted the remaining $4.285 million into a signing bonus that will be prorated over the next five seasons. The renegotiation lowers Johnson's 2013 cap number from $12.201 million to $8.773 million… Moving forward, Johnson has cap numbers of $13.058 million (2014), $20.558 million (2015), $24.008 million (2016), $21.357 million (2017), $17 million in 2018 and $18.25 million in 2019. Have 801 receiving yards. Average at least 18.6 yards per catch (minimum 32 catches). Have 12 receiving touchdowns. If Rogers does reach his incentives, his salary for 2006 will increase by $2.6 million and he'll be eligible for a $2 million roster bonus in March. He would also be eligible for another $2 million roster bonus in March of 2007, when his salary for that season would escalate by $3.3 million. There is also more money available on the final two years of his contract but, by that time, Rogers will have either restructured his deal or moved on. From PFT: POSTED 4:10 p.m. EST, December 10, 2005 LIONS INTENTIONALLY HOLDING ROGERS BACK? A reader tipped us off to an item on the Mlive.com blog by Bill Emkow regarding the question of whether the Lions intentionally are sitting receiver Charles Rogers to reduce his compensation in 2006, and whether this means that the team plans to keep in him 2006 with the lower salary. We've eyeballed Rogers' contract, and it looks like the Lions indeed might be parking the No. 2 overall pick in the 2003 draft in order to hold back his pay next season. Contracts for high-end players typically contain a variety of escalators and other extras tied to a list of triggers. In Rogers' case, season-ending injuries in 2003 and 2004 already have caused him to miss out on some of the additional money. For now, though, he's in a position to unlock millions in 2006 -- if he participates in 45 percent of the team's offensive snaps. Playing in the last five games of the season might have put him over the hump; being deactivated for at least two of them (he was a healthy scratch against the Vikings on December 4) likely will be enough to cause him to fail to activate the extra payments. In addition to the 45-percent trigger, Rogers also would have to fulfill one of a variety of performance achievements -- four of which are individual and two of which are team-based. Given that he only has 11 catches for 126 yards and no touchdowns in six games this season, he surely would not have satisfied any of the quartet of individual marks in the final quintet of games: 41 catches; 801 receiving yards; an average of 18.6 yards per catch based on 32 catches (his current average is 11.45); or 12 receiving touchdowns. But one of the team triggers might have been attainable. Not the first one listed in the contract (improvement in wins over 2004), since that would require the 4-8 Lions to finish up at 7-9. However, the Lions are on pace to fulfill the other team-based trigger -- improvement in passing completion percentage. Last year, the Lions completed 56.436 percent of their passes. This year, the Lions have completed 57.037 percent of their passes. If the team finishes above 56.436 in completion percentage and Rogers plays in 45 percent of the total offensive snaps for the year, Rogers contract unlocks the following items of compensation: 1. A bonus in the amount of $1,335,416, if he is on the roster on the second day of the 2006 league year; 2. An increase in his 2006 salary from $1,641,250 to $4,185,000 (which equates to an escalator worth $2,543,750); 3. A $2 million roster bonus due on July 1, 2006; 4. An increase in his 2007 salary from $1,850,000 to $5,150,000 (which equates to an escalator worth $3.3 million); 5. A $2 million roster bonus due on July 1, 2007; 6. An increase in his 2008 salary from $1,210,417 to $5,675,000 (which equates to an escalator worth $4,464,583); 7. A $2.6 million roster bonus due on July 1, 2007 (we think that the contract has a typo -- this roster bonus probably was intended to be due on July 1, 2008); and 8. An increase in his 2008 salary from $1,210,417 to $9,500,000 (which equates to an escalator worth $8,289,583). Although some of this money could be made up if Rogers meets certain play-time and performance thresholds in future seasons, his failure to activate the 45 percent trigger in 2005 prevents him from currently inserting a total of $26,533,332 in roster boni and salary increases into his contract. Along with the $17.4 million option bonus and his standard base salaries for 2009 through 2012, the total comes to $41.7 million, the figure cited by the media. The rest of Stafford's $72 million consists of a potential $7.8 million salary escalator in 2012 and escalated salaries of $11.5 million in 2013 and $11 million in 2014... he has additional escalators of up to $1.5 million in certain seasons that could push his total contract value to its maximum of $78 million. Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: Stafford reduced his base salary for 2011 from $9 million to $525,000, the minimum for players with two credited seasons… Both players made up the difference in signing bonuses… Stafford's bonus was $8.475 million… Bill Shea, Crain's Detroit Business: Stafford had his $11.5 million base salary converted in March into a $10.8 million signing bonus and $615,000 base salary, which saved the Lions more than $8 million of cap room. The Lions also extended his contract by one year to reduce that new signing bonus proration to $2.7 million per year. Stafford's 2015 contract year can be voided if he's still on the Lions roster two days after the 2014 season's Super Bowl. His base salaries are $12 million for 2013, $11 million for 2014 and $15 million for the voidable year. Dave Birkett, Detroit Free Press: Under terms of his contract, which totals $76.5 million over five years, Stafford will receive modest base salaries of $4 million this season, $2 million next and $9.5 million in 2015. In 2016, his base salary jumps to $17 million. In 2017, it’s $16.5 million. Stafford got $41.5 million in guaranteed money, including a $27.5-million signing bonus. His base salaries this year and next also are guaranteed, and $8 million of 2015 salary fully guarantees next March. For cap purposes, his bonus is spread equally over the life of the deal, leaving the Lions with sizable cap commitments of $22.5 million in 2016 and $22 million in 2017.
