Specific problem
Calculus a theoretical concept in mathematics and is commonly used in engineering and economics to
analyze functions. Discuss in your groups and brainstorm on possible applications of calculus in
economics. Work individually in accessing the online website provided; chose two problems presented in
the website. Solve the problems manually and using the software application provided. Report on your
findings.
Research and analysis
The students are to form groups and discuss the various applications of calculus in economics. They are
free to search for information from the internet using Google search engine. Each group will then choose
a representative that will present the group’s findings to the rest of the class.
Results presentation
The students are required to write short notes during the discussion and agree on which notes to present.
Each group representative will then make an oral presentation to the rest of the class. The representative
will explain the applications of calculus in economics and answer questions posed by the student.
Supporting activity
The instructor will make a short but detailed introduction explaining the meaning of various concepts
including mathematical functions, integration and differentiation. The teacher will then use examples to
demonstrate how to solve sample questions.
Student activities before computer use
i.
ii.
The teacher will write two word problems on the board.
The students will solve the problems on paper and report their answers to the teacher.
Student activities during computer use
i.
The students will open their computer browsers and view the online video: Calculus Documentary
ii.
The students will then open the website: Ask Dr. Math and solve two word problems presented in
the website.
iii.
They will then be required to solve the same world problems using the application: Web MATH
compare the answers.
iv.
Students will use the Google search engine to search for information regarding the applications of
calculus in economics.
Student activities after computer use
i.
Students will form groups of five and discuss and write short notes the various applications of
calculus in engineering and economics.
ii.
Each group will then choose a representative.
iii.
The representative will present the group’s findings to the rest of the class.

Score
How the lesson meets the needs, abilities, interests, and learning styles of the target group.
The students in this target group have a strong liking for social interactions and prefer verbal reasoning.
The lesson supports this interest by providing the students with an opportunity to participate in group
discussions and share ideas. Moreover, the discussions enable the students to exercise the auditory and
social learning styles. Although the lesson is based on Mathematics, it discusses economics and
business-related issues so as to support the student’s interests. In response to the poor reading ability of
the students, the lesson the lesson incorporates a word-problem solving activity that provides the
learners with an opportunity to nurture their poor reading skills.
