Collection Assessment: English Literature Prepared by Harry D. Nuttall (March 2014) Introduction Based on guidelines provided by the WLN Collection Assessment Service, which provides a framework within which to evaluate a library’s current holdings and the level of activity at which the collection is being developed, the English Literature collection overall is rated at 3cP (advanced study level, predominantly English language). The English Literature collection is central to the University curriculum since it supports study for degree programs in English at both the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels and degrees in language arts and secondary education offered by the College of Education, as well as for k-12 teachers pursuing the Master’s degree. The collection also supports students taking a minor in English along with the degree in their major field. Refer to the conspectus sheets and checklist tables at the end of this narrative for a more detailed examination of the Library’s holdings. Holdings Collection counts indicate that the English Literature collection contains 37,506 print titles in the Library of Congress classification PR, which comprises the literatures of the British Isles and current and former countries of the British Commonwealth and colonies. This number includes print titles in the circulating, periodicals, reference, and juvenile collections and represents an increase of 9.2% from the previous English Literature assessment (2007). Additionally, there are 6,052 entries in the Library of English Literature microbook set (PR1105.L5) as well as 306 electronic books (e-books) classed in PR. Also, there are over 10,000 titles in the Early English Books microfilm series in LC classification PN, many of whose content would fall under the rubric of “English Literature.” The classification PZ is designated “Fiction in English.” The range PZ1 through PZ4, which excludes the mainly children’s literature call number range of PZ5 – PZ10, contains 4,523 titles. This brings the grand total to 43,632 titles. There were 119 withdrawals from the PR classification over the years 2005/2006 through 2011/2012. rev. 2013 LC Class Category PR English Literature Print Holdings 37,506 E-Books Microforms Totals 306 6,052 43,938 Although they do not fall strictly within the scope of this assessment, from a utilitarian perspective the non-PR class holdings, referenced in the preceding paragraph, do strengthen and enhance the value of the English Literature collection. Expenditures Fiscal Year 2006/07 2007/08 2008/09 2009/10 2010/11 2011/12 Totals Amount Expended for Books $38,968 $35,148 $29,916 $33,181 $39,571 $45,631 $222,415 Amount Expended for Serials $12,288 $10,626 $19,440 $17,291 $17,095 $28,159 $76,740 The amounts are for all literatures. Regarding the figures given for books, it is impossible to subdivide expenditures for “literature” into subcategories such as for period or nation, and serials have migrated away from the individual subscription model to the aggregator and subject database models. Dollar amounts spent on aggregator databases cannot be sub-divided into subject categories, but subject specific databases are included in fiscal reports. The title subject listings in Serials Solutions present a more accurate reporting of Library support for serials. Books Expenditures Because the category of English Literature does not have a separate fund code in the Houston Cole Library acquisitions budget -- the budget line is for just “literature” -- a formula is required to derive a cost estimation for it. The method used here takes the number of titles collected by Houston Cole Library in LC class PR for the years surveyed and multiplies them by the combined mean average cost per book as listed in the Yankee Book Peddler New Title Reports (http://www.ybp.com/title_reports.html). This provides a useable approximation of annual expenditures. 2 rev. 2013 Monographs Expenditures Fiscal Year (October – September): # titles purchased x avg. cost 2006/07 (218 x $41.56) 2007/08 (231 x $43.82) 2008/09 (179 x $46.49) 2009/10 (158 x $41.36) 2010/2011 (152 x $46.49) 2011/12 (193 x $45.92) Total: 1,131 Expenditure $9,060 $10,122 $8,322 $6,535 $7,066 $8,863 $49,968 The following table reveals the Library’s holdings when compared against standard checklist bibliographies for the field of English literature. A collection ratio of above 40% is considered acceptable and above 70%, good. In addition, currently there are 20 individual print or electronic subscriptions to class PR. These numbers are included in, but do not make up the totality of, the table below. Title Magazines for Libraries, 20th edition (2011) Titles Held 125 Titles Listed 195 Percentage 64 These titles, combined with what is available through aggregator and proprietary databases, provide access to over 505 periodical titles in literature. The table at the very end of this assessment provides a representative sampling of the full text journals to which the Library provides access in print and/or electronic format, in which articles pertaining to English literature may be found. The diversity of titles and call numbers illustrates the obstacles encountered in trying to create a complete, comprehensive list of relevant journals for English literature. However, these obstacles should be viewed as reflecting a strength rather than a weakness. While accurately tabulating holdings counts may have become more difficult, access to content has expanded greatly. 4 rev. 2013 Houston Cole Library collects a small number of print titles for English Literature, which is expanded by relevant content in the more than two hundred electronic databases to which the Library subscribes. These databases in turn are supplemented by content provided through “free internet resources.” A snapshot of these holdings can be found using the Library’s Serials Solutions link located at http://we8af9qh2e.search.serialssolutions.com/, and performing a subject search, as the following screen capture illustrates. Subject Headings in Languages & Literatures [Matter deleted] English o American Literature (214) o English Language (91) o English Literature (203) [Matter deleted] Literature - General (582) Clicking on a link brings up the list of journal titles in that category. It can be seen that between “English Literature” and “Literature – General” Houston Cole Library provides access to 785 journals, with journals more broad in scope adding to the accessibility of articles on English literature. Access to periodicals and serials is multi-tiered and is complemented by the content in Gale/Cengage’s various “Literary Criticism” book series such as Poetry Criticism and Short Story Criticism, whose content is accessible both electronically and in print. The particular strength of these series is that they contain article excerpts from scholarly journals which the library never had the budget to subscribe to and for which the database backfiles are not deep enough to provide full text. When viewed in a comprehensive manner it can be seen that Houston Cole Library offers a four-tiered system of access to content in serial publications: 1) Magazines, newspapers, and scholarly journals in print format, supplemented by 2) Selective full text access in some two hundred plus electronic databases which may be searched individually by subject or title and in groups by provider, supplemented by 3) Selective full text in free access internet websites, supplemented by 4) Gale/Cengage’s literary criticism series books. 5 rev. 2013 Non-print Media The English Literature collection contains audio-visual titles in the PN and PR classifications. The AV collection comprises 108 audiocassettes, 12 DVDs, 1 filmstrip, 3 kits, and 46 videocassettes in classification PN and 79 audiocassettes, 8 DVDs, 40 LP recordings, and 226 videocassettes in classification PR. Since the previous assessment done in 2007, the Library has begun subscriptions to two streaming video services. Source VAST Academic Video Online Films on Demand Total Number of Titles 134 Access via http://vast.alexanderstreet.com/ 198 http://digital.films.com/Dashboard.aspx 332 Defined Access The Library's defined access for English literature is rated a 3c (Advanced Study or Instructional Support). Access is provided through an extensive collection of remotely accessible electronic resources, including bibliographic tools, texts, indexes, journals, etc. Besides in literature-centric databases, full text articles pertaining to English literature can be accessed through aggregator databases covering other fields, such as psychology and sociology. Houston Cole Library now collects books in electronic format in addition to the traditional print format, and through ALLIES has reciprocal borrowing agreements with other academic libraries in Alabama to give members of the JSU community access to the print collections of these other libraries. The Library's catalog is web-based, and disciplined-based searching is enhanced by a number of custom-prepared library guides (LibGuides). Analytic catalog entries with links to full-text are entered into the Library's catalog for those titles available through various aggregator databases. In addition, the subject specialist librarian routinely evaluates websites for inclusion (or removal). A descriptive catalog record for appropriate sites is incorporated into the catalog, providing links to the resources through URLs. 6 rev. 2013 Preservation Commitment The Preservation Commitment is rated a 2, Physical Preservation Level. Material is retained for its useful life and mended whenever possible. When the item is beyond mending, efforts are made to replace it. Because materials on literature have a longer useful life than those in, for example, the physical sciences, there is no systematized weeding or planned replacement program for the English Literature collection. Supplemental Support Holdings in the related subject collections of American Literature; Western European Literatures; Languages and Related Literatures; History; Art; Auxiliary Sciences of History; Philosophy, Ethics, and Religion; and General Works provide supplemental support to the English Literature collection. SUMMARY Strengths: The areas in English Literature most heavily used to supplement the curriculum -- Shakespeare and Literatures of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries -- continue to have more than adequate holdings. In addition, there has been an observed increase in the use of the holdings in History and Criticism by form and period and literature from the periods of 1900-1960 (modern literature) and 1961present (contemporary literature), as well as post-colonial literatures. Collection activity in these areas has been intensified in response. The Library's holdings in Old and Middle English, Chaucer, Renaissance Prose and Poetry, and Renaissance Playwrights are more than adequate for study at the advanced level, although use of these portions of the collection has tailed off some since the previous assessment. It should also be noted that the Library owns complete microform sets of the Early English Books (STC 1), Early English Text Society Publications, and the English Literary Periodicals. In addition, the Library has substantial holdings of the Early English Books (STC II) and 3 units of the Eighteenth Century (STC III). The greatest improvement in the English Literature collection is in the areas of serials and defined access and can be attributed to the proliferation of aggregator databases and other electronic resources, as these address the area where the collection customarily had been the weakest: access to full text articles within the periodical literature. The inclusion of freely accessible websites and the addition of streaming video collections enhance the collection in a manner not available at the time of the 2007 assessment. Liaison activities with English Department faculty have been intensified, resulting in increased faculty input in collection development. 7 rev. 2013 Weaknesses: Although there are no demonstrable weaknesses in the collection, canon expansion and shifts in “high use” areas mandate close attention to collection practices to insure that present strengths are not neglected in the interest of collection building in other areas. At the freshman level, the collection is well represented. Closer scrutiny should be directed toward the major field-level courses in the 300 and 400 range. Recommendations Collection activity should remain at the current 3cP level. Collection in reference should continue, balancing print and electronic formats, for both the traditional functions of reference and to shore up weaknesses elsewhere in the collection. Collection practices should reflect changes in canon and curriculum. 8 rev. 2013 APPENDIX The following tables present in greater detail information included in the Assessment narrative.
