Monday, October 3, 2011 Reported by: Miss Fernandez Hello everybody! I am Miss Fernandez, your Roving Reporter for today Monday, October 3, 2011 since almost everyone has written an article for the Daily Book Blog. Way to go!!! Today we had a lot going on since Mondays are our longest days together. To begin our day students brought in all of their supplies and found their new seats. Then, they talked about their weekend activities for a few minutes. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, taking attendance and announcing After School Learning would begin, we began English Language Arts. During ELA we learned two new root words; STRUCT which means to build and RUPT which means to burst or break. We wrote some examples for each in our Prefixes, Suffixes and Roots booklets. Once Blanca and Adrian entered our room we were able to begin Social Studies. First, tables were given a chance to finish and present their poster assignments. Teams that were done helped distribute Science materials for our next unit. LOBOS team taught us that tolerance means to allow others to believe and think what they want without criticizing them. After presentations on the Middle Colonies we continued with ELA. We discussed our Reading Strategy of the week which is to CATEGORIZE AND CLASSIFY and practiced using a passage about gray and red wolves. Immediately after that we began rotations. Blue group answered questions in chapter 4 of Esperanza Rising, white group worked on If you Lived during the Time of the Great San Francisco Earthquake seatwork and red group read chapter 5 of Fudge-a-Mania with me. During recess plums were given as a healthy snack of the day! Yummy in my tummy! After recess I met with Independent contracts, Monica and Marybel as they worked on the Indian in the Cupboard chapters 5-7. Ten minutes later at 11:25am students went to their Team Time classrooms to continue with Main Idea COMPREHENSION SMART GOALS. At 12:05 we went to lunch. After lunch students went to their ELD classes. Upon returning to class students brought in their backpacks, and silent read until everyone returned to class. Once everyone was back we began Math rotations. We learned Ch.3 Lesson 5-Rounding Whole Numbers & Decimals in 3 easy steps… 1) Underline the digit that’s being rounded 2) Circle the number to the RIGHT 3) 4 and below stays low, 5-9 climbs the vine! Students either learned with me, went to the table to practice comparing decimals, played Orchard or 1 st in Math, and/or worked on seatwork Daily Routine and Practice pages for CH. 3; 24, 26, 28, 30 & 32 odds only!!! Following the math lesson, we did a bit of Response to Literature writing with “Ali Baba and the Missing Glass Slipper.” As a class we decided that the theme is RESPONSIBILITY because Ali Baba showed it by looking for the missing dog named Slipper in his apartment, outside and in front of the neighbor’s door. He was probably responsible because he wanted to convince his parents he could handle having a pet dog of his own. Once we were done taking notes for the first or introductory paragraph on our graphic organizers, we packed up to go home, cleaned up and did jobs. Star Student of the Day was Monica for being responsible!
