Tracking , Privacy , You & The 21st Century When you talk online the internet listens Don’t Be Paranoid • This is just the 21st century • What I will discuss is commonplace • Privacy and anonymity on the internet is rare IP Address • Your address on the internet • All your devices have an unique address – mac address Internet Browsing & Advertising • Why do the ads appear ? – Cookies – Super Cookies • Cookies can come from online advertisements, graphics, and the mere act of visiting a website. • It is the placement of these that tailor ads to your surfing Location Based • Google and Bing – They know where you are – They know what you are surfing for • It is all about ADVERTISING – No one said the internet and using companies assets was free – We all pay Smartphones / Tablets • When you go online the internet is listening – These are internet devices – You should expect tracking – You can still buy a feature phone • Apple block a lot of apps that want to access your details – Google will ask you to agree Smartphones / Tablets • Android - Google – Google Location History – Turned on by default • iOS – Apple – To access Frequent Locations, open your iPhone’s “Settings” menu, select “Privacy”, then “Location Services”, then scroll all the way down to “System Services”. – In System Services scroll all the way down to the bottom, press “Frequent Locations” and look at the “History” section. Click on one of the area names to see where you’ve been. Online Assistants • Siri • Google Now • Cortana – Coming with Windows 10 • They know who you are , where you are and sometimes what you want Social Media • Is designed to track and share your location – Facebook – business – Twitter – business – Instagram – business • Designed to show you ads Facebook • Location on posts • Will tailor your newsfeed to what they deem as suitable for you • Go into “ Privacy Settings & Tools “ to adjust – Public , Friends , Custom Twitter • Location on posts • Promoted posts • Interacting with tweets Instagram • • • • Location photo tagging Sharing and interacting online Owned by Facebook Set your profile to Private then only approved followers will see your photos TV - Voice • TV – Smart tvs – voice control – Need to listen to improve • Dictation Software – Need to listen to improve • Any software that uses voice recognition with an internet setting – It is how they improve Photos - Cameras • When we take a photo – It knows where that photo was taken – location based • When we back up photos online – Date – Location – Faces – facial recognition Adblockers • Do they work ? • The internet runs on ads • Would you pay for an ad free internet ? – Remember the bad old days – flashing ads ! Cloud Services • Email / Storage • US based providers will have your data scanned by the government • Google privacy – We use the information we collect from all of our services to provide, maintain, protect and improve them, to develop new ones, and to protect Google and our users. We also use this information to offer you tailored content – like giving you more relevant search results and ads.
