Valencia Community College wants graduates to possess and demonstrate a set of global
competencies including the ability to Think,Communicate,Value and Act. In an effort to help
you acquire and improve your ability to demonstrate the competencies this course will include
activities that require you to:
1. Think clearly, critically and creatively.
2. Communicate with others in written and verbal form.
3. Make reasoned value judgments and responsible commitments.
4. Act purposefully, reflectively and responsibly.
Class Policies:
Attendance:






You are expected to attend every class meeting, unless an illness or emergency makes
it impossible for you to do so. You may be withdrawn after 3 (or more) absences.
Absences are excused solely at my discretion. I may require that you prove the
existence of extenuating circumstances before excusing any absence(s).
If you are absent, you should contact a fellow student (“a buddy”) about what you
have missed.
If you are absent on a day that an in-class activity occurs for credit or extra credit, you
must make-up the activity before the next class meeting.
Being on time is as important as attendance. You are expected to be on time as well
as remain in class for the whole session. If you expect to leave the class early, please
let me know ahead of time.
Two tardies count as one absence. Coming late or leaving early may count as a
tardy.
Conduct:



You are encouraged to actively participate and ask pertinent questions during class.
Courtesy will be observed at all times.
To create a good environment for learning, avoid sidebar conversations with other
students while work is being done at the board, rude comments or remarks, raised
voices or confrontational comments.
If your actions in class are deemed by your instructor to be disruptive, you will be
asked to leave class immediately. If you are ever asked to leave class, you may be
permitted to return to future class meetings after consultation with your instructor
outside of class. You may also be required to arrange a conference with another
college official before attending class again.
Academic Honesty:
You may collaborate or work together during class activities and when working on the
homework. Group activities are strongly encouraged. However, copying of any kind,
regardless of the number of editorial changes and/or renaming will be considered cheating.
Storing formulas on a calculator and using unauthorized sources during exams will also be
considered cheating. Calculators and other materials may not be shared during exams. Cell
phones will NOT be permitted to use instead of calculators during exams. If you are caught
cheating, or enabling others to cheat, you will be given a score of 0 on that assignment.
Grading:



Partial credit on tests and assignments is sometimes given when appropriate.
Grades will not be disclosed over the telephone or via e-mail except through your
Atlas account.
You must meet with me if you wish to discuss your grade.
Withdrawal:

Per Valencia Policy 4-07 (Academic Progress, Course Attendance and Grades, and
Withdrawals), a student who withdraws from class before the withdrawal deadline of
April 1, 2016 for Spring Full Term classes will receive a grade of “W”. A student is
not permitted to withdraw after the withdrawal deadline. A faculty member MAY
withdraw a student up to the beginning of the final exam period for violation of the
class attendance policy. A student who is withdrawn by faculty for violation of the
class attendance policy will receive a grade of “W.” Any student who withdraws or is
withdrawn from a class during a third or subsequent attempt in the same course will
be assigned a grade of “F.” For a complete policy and procedure overview on
Valencia Policy 4-07 please go to:
http://valenciaccollege.edu/generalcounsel/policydetail.cfm?RecordID=75.
If you wish to withdraw from the course, you must do so by April 1, 2016 to receive the
grade of W. If you do not withdraw, and do not take the final exam, you will receive F in the
course.
Methods of Evaluation:
Your grade is based on four components: homework, in-class activities, tests and a
comprehensive final exam.
Homework: Specific homework problems are assigned for each section in WebAssign. You
have 5 attempts for each portion of each problem to submit the answer. After 5 attempts (for
each part), your result will count as final result. The due dates can be found on the calendar in
WebAssign. No homework will be accepted after due dates.
In-class activities: Chapter mini-projects and activities will be completed during class. If you
miss class during which the activity was held (for excused absences only), you must submit the
activity before the next time the class meets.
Tests: There will be 4 exams. No make-up tests! However, the lowest test grade is dropped. If you
miss a test, that test score will be the dropped score, NO EXCEPTIONS!
Final: There will be a cumulative final exam. No make-up final exam!
Your grade for the course is determined as follows:
