How does a group work best?
• Today, we are going to develop rules for our
Literature Circles.
• In college and beyond, most of the work you
will do will be done in a team or group.
• Teams work best when all members agree
to follow group defined rules.

What makes a good rule for a team?
1) The rule should apply to everyone. Anyone
should be able to follow it.

Ex1: Only the smartest or hardest working
students should participate.

2) The rule should be aligned with an academic
purpose.
Q: What’s problematic about this rule?
Ex2: Once the group decides on a discussion
topic, it should only focus on that topic.

Additional Guidelines
• Rules should be positively framed if
possible.
• For example, “All voices deserve to be
heard” is better than “Don’t talk over
people”

Round Three - Decide on 4 Best Rules
as a Group (5 min)
In total, the class rules set will have 5 rules, but I
am giving all groups the first one. Write these on
the handout.

give 100% effort to achieve that goal.

Round Four – Share Best Rules with
Class
1) Write ONE RULE from your list on the
Construction Paper (someone from the
group initial the rule).
2) This paper will circulate TWO TIMES.
Round Five – Vote on Top 4 Rules
1) The class will vote on FOUR rules for the
class set.
2) All students will sign the rule set at some
point today or tomorrow.
