Monday Week 1 Introduction of the Aztec Empire by looking at a map of what their empire was in 1519. Read story of where the Aztecs were believed to come from. Introduce new vocabulary Review numbers 0-1600 Group Activity answering questioner sheet from what we learned today such as: According to the story where did the Aztecs come from? From their seats have students write on piece of paper the name of the lake that was near Teotihuacan. Tuesday Week 1 Review the activity answer sheets. Review vocabulary / numbers. Read about the four phases in order to become the new ruler. These were “Separation and retreat”, Investiture and coronation, the coronation war, confirmation. Have a class discussion about these phases, and answer questions. On a post note write down one phase of becoming a ruler, turn it in as they leave. Wednesday Week 1 Learn about Moctezuma. Read p. 18 of “The Aztecs” book. Look at power point presentation of Teotihuacan. Review new vocabulary words. Go over with class the project due on the third week. Students will be put into groups in which they will decide how they will be making Teotihuacan. On a post note write down the name of one pyramid found in Teotihuacan. Thursday Week 1 View YouTube video on preterito Do PowerPoint presentation on preterito Give students the activity sheet to do in groups about the preterito Talk about the Aztec religion. Introduce some of the gods that they believed in. What were some of the things that they did for their gods? What was behind their beliefs, who were the ones that made the rituals? What were some of the rituals? Friday Week 1 Review preterito; look at PowerPoint on the preterito. Learn new vocabulary of the names of some of the things the Aztecs used during their dances. Review numbers and colors. Look at YouTube video on Aztec religious dance. Teach them some of the basic steps for a dance. Monday Week two Dance a song like the Aztecs did. Go over the preterito, by doing activity sheet in groups changing the verbs Read the legend of Quetzalcoatl. Introduce the imperfecto with power point presentation Tuesday Week two Review imperfecto by doing activity sheet on changing the verb. Correcting the activity together as a class. Teach them about “Guerra’s floridas”. What was the purpose of them? Why did they capture prisoners, and what was the name of one of the gods they did this for. Read p. 20 from “Latinoamerica “book On a post note write a sentence using imperfecto, hand it in as your walking out. Wednesday Week two Talk about the Aztec Sun Stone and what the symbols around it represent. This stone was honoring the last sun god Tonatiuh and the previous gods before him. Have the class draw their own picture of the sun stone. On the bottom of their picture have them write one thing that they found interesting about this stone. Break class into groups and each get to share their art work for five minutes and then rotate until everyone has seen their art work. Thursday Week two Learn about the social classes of the Aztec community. What was the only way you could move up? Talk about what were some of the qualities that they valued, such as poets, and arts. Learn about some of the food that they use to grow Review new vocabulary words. Review the color song and numbers. Do a crossword about the vocabulary that we have learned. Friday Week two Review the legend of Quetzalcoatl, and talk about the dance rituals that the Aztecs did. Bring in guest speakers/dancers from the Aztec dance group from church in Minneapolis. Have them dance and explain the meaning of the dances that they will be doing, as well as talk about their costumes that they wear. Monday week three Each group presents their Teotihuacan model that they made. Tuesday Week three Watch the movie from the History Chanel “The Aztec Empire”. Wednesday Week three We talk about the movie. Finish watching the movie On the board each student will write down one interesting fact that they found about the movie. Do activity sheet on preterite and imperfect. Thursday Week three As students walk in give them a post note and on a Y chart, have them place it where they are at understanding the preterito and imperfecto. This way I will know what areas I will need to focus more during the review. Review for test. Friday Week three Take test on what we have learned about the Aztec’s and on the preterite and imperfect
