TWENTIETH AND TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY FASHION PROJECT
Purpose: Recognize the relationship between historical events and fashion evolution.
Decades for study: 1940-1949, 1950-1959, 1960-1969, 1970-1979, 1980-1989, 1990-1999,
and 2000--.
You will work in small groups. Each group will be assigned one decade in fashion
history to research and report to the class. Gather as much information as you can
about fashion in the period. You will submit written items as well as teach the class
about this period. Your reporting should be as CREATIVE as possible.
Requirements:
Oral Presentation (PowerPoint Presentation or Movie Maker)
1. A one-minute cassette tape or CD of music from the time period.
2. A ten-minute videotape or DVD segment from an old movie, film, or sitcom based on
the time period. Give the name of the movie and the date. (Include in presentation
a summary explaining how the segment reflects the decade.)
3. Describe possible moods of the decade (political and/or economic factors that
influenced fashion during this time).
4. Include information about important designers that influenced the decade.
5. (Extra Credit) Model clothes from the decade during your presentation. Bring in an
item of clothing currently in fashion that was influenced by your decade of fashion.
Note: Oral presentation. You must use presentation software (i.e. PowerPoint). Your
classmates will take notes from your presentation. Be creative. The presentation
should be no less than 10 and no more than 20 minutes.
Poster Display
6. Collect and display ten illustrations and descriptions (pictures, sketches,
photocopies) of women’s clothing and four illustrations and descriptions (pictures,
sketches, photocopies) of men’s clothing from the period. You may also want to
include accessories, samples of makeup, hair styles, shoes, swimwear,
eveningwear, and sleepwear. The illustrations should be shown during both portions
of the presentation.
7. (Optional) Interview grandparents, parents, friends, and/or teachers about your
decade. Share their comments with the class.
