Problem sets and Quizzes
• Problem sets usually posted on Thursday
– Not graded, key will be posted online
– Can work together, but responsible for content
• Quiz almost every Thursday, based on
problem set. Bring calculators to class on
Thursdays.
• There WILL be a quiz on Thursday. Bring
calculator, syllabus, and muscle handout.
• One quiz grade dropped
i-Clicker Questions
• Bring i-Clicker to class every day
• Can earn 1 point per day with a maximum of
20 clicker points
• To earn your daily point you must answer all
but one of the questions for that day
Lab Projects
• Two lab projects (20% of total grade):
– Journal Article Review project (5%)
• Individual
– Experimental project (15%)
• can work individually or in pairs
Journal Article Review Project (5%)
• Select a scientific journal article from one of
the following journals:
• Journal of Biomechanics
• Clinical Biomechanics
• Gait and Posture
• Write a critical review of the article,
pretending you have been asked to review the
manuscript by the editor of the journal and
decided whether it is worthy of publication
Review Components
• Importance of the research question
• Originality of the work
• Delineation of strengths and weaknesses of
– methodology
– experimental
– statistical approach
– interpretation of results
• Writing Style and figure/table presentation
• Ethical Concerns
Experiment Project (15%)
• Experiment Project
– Perform an experiment to answer a question
– Create a computer/mathematical model to
answer a question
– Re-analyze data from literature
• Requirements
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Must deal with biomechanics (bio + movement)
Must research scientific articles
Must utilize what you learn in class
Must turn in a written report
Can work solo or in pairs
Work on it outside class
Get advice beforehand
Projects: Late Policy/Lab grading
• Due in class
• lose 10% for every day late
• Project days in lab are graded
Agenda
• Labs week after next (Jan 28th)
• Refresh anatomy, physics and TRIG
• There will be a Quiz on Thursday
– Bring syllabus
– Bring from Nordin book: Biomechanics of skeletal
muscle chapter by Pitman (password=
biomechanics2013)
– Bring calculator
– Refresh Trig (next slides)
Trig Review
Right Triangles
– Pythagorean Theorem: A2 + B2 = C2
• A,B =sides adjacent to right angle
• C=hypotenuse
– SOHCAHTOA
• Sin=opposite/hypotenuse
• Cos=adjacent/hypotenuse
• Tan=opposite/adjacent
Trig Review
Non-Right Triangles
– Law of Sines: Sin(a)/A=sin(b)/B
• a, b are angles
• A, B are sides opposite a and b, respectively
– Law of Cosines
• C2 = A2 + B2 -2ABcos(c)
– A,B,C are sides of a triangle
– c is the angle opposite side C
