The Sabbath of Rest
Leviticus Chapter 23
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them,
Concerning the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall
proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my
feasts.
3 Six days shall work be done; but the seventh day is
the sabbath of rest, a holy convocation; ye shall do
no work therein; it is the sabbath of the Lord in all
your dwellings.
The Lord’s Passover
4 These are the feasts of the Lord, even holy
convocations, which ye shall proclaim in their seasons.
5 In the fourteenth day of the first month at even
is the Lord's passover.

The Feast of Unleavened Bread
6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the
feast of unleavened bread unto the Lord; seven days ye
must eat unleavened bread.
7 In the first day ye shall have a holy convocation; ye
shall do no servile work therein.
8 But ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto the
Lord seven days; in the seventh day is a holy
convocation; ye shall do no servile work therein.
The First-fruits
9 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
10 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say
unto them, When ye be come into the land
which I give unto you, and shall reap the harvest
thereof, then ye shall bring a sheaf of the firstfruits of your harvest unto the priest;
11 And he shall wave the sheaf before the Lord,
to be accepted for you; on the morrow after
the sabbath the priest shall wave it.
12 And ye shall offer that day when ye wave the sheaf a
he lamb without blemish of the first year for a burnt
offering unto the Lord.
13 And the meat offering thereof shall be two tenth
deals of fine flour mingled with oil, and offering made
by fire unto the Lord for a sweet savor; and the drink
offering thereof shall be of wine, the fourth part of a
hin.
14 And ye shall eat neither bread, nor parched corn, nor
green ears, until the self-same day that ye have brought
an offering unto your God; it shall be a statute for ever
throughout your generations in all your dwellings.
The Festival of Weeks
15 And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the
sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the
wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete;
16 Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath
shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat
offering unto the Lord.
17 Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves of
two tenth deals; they shall be of fine flour; they shall be
baken with leaven; they are the first-fruits unto the Lord.
18 And ye shall offer with the bread seven lambs without
blemish of the first year, and one young bullock, and two
rams; they shall be for a burnt offering unto the Lord, with
their meat offering, and their drink offerings, even an
offering made by fire, of sweet savor unto the Lord.
19 Then ye shall sacrifice one kid of the goats for a sin
offering, and two lambs of the first year for a sacrifice
of peace offerings.
20 And the priest shall wave them with the bread of
the first-fruits for a wave offering before the Lord, with
the two lambs; they shall be holy to the Lord for the
priest.
21 And ye shall proclaim on the self-same day, that it
may be a holy convocation unto you; ye shall do no
servile work therein; it shall be a statute for ever in
all your dwellings throughout your generations.
22 And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou
shalt not make clean riddance of the corners of thy
field when thou reapest, neither shalt thou gather any
gleaning of thy harvest; thou shalt leave them unto the
poor, and to the stranger; I am the Lord your God.
Blowing of Trumpets
23 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
24 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the
seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall
ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets,
a holy convocation.
25 Ye shall do no servile work therein; but ye shall offer
an offering made by fire unto the Lord.
A Day of Atonement
26 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
27 Also on the tenth day of this seventh month
there shall be a day of atonement; it shall be a holy
convocation unto you; and ye shall afflict your souls,
and offer an offering made by fire unto the Lord.
28 And ye shall do no work in that same day; for it is a
day of atonement, to make an atonement for you
before the Lord your God.
29 For whatsoever soul it be that shall not be afflicted
in that same day, he shall be cut off from among his
people.
30 And whatsoever soul it be that doeth any work
in that same day, the same soul will I destroy from
among his people.
31 Ye shall do no manner of work; it shall be a
statute for ever throughout your generations in all
your dwellings.
32 It shall be unto you a sabbath of rest, and ye
shall afflict your souls; in the ninth day of the
month at even, from even unto even, shall ye
celebrate your sabbath.
Feast of Tabernacles
33 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
34 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, The fifteenth
day of this seventh month shall be the feast of
tabernacles for seven days unto the Lord.
35 On the first day shall be a holy convocation; ye shall do
no servile work therein.
36 Seven days ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto
the Lord; on the eighth day shall be a holy convocation
unto you, and ye shall offer an offering made by fire unto
the Lord; it is a solemn assembly; and ye shall do no servile
work therein.
37 These are the feasts of the Lord, which ye shall
proclaim to be holy convocations, to offer an offering
made by fire unto the Lord, a burnt offering, and a meat
offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, everything upon
his day;
38 Beside the sabbaths of the Lord, and beside your gifts,
and beside all your vows, and beside all your free-will
offerings, which ye give unto the Lord.
39 Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month,
when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall
keep a feast unto the Lord seven days; on the first day
shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a
sabbath.
40 And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of
goodly trees, branches of palm-trees, and the boughs
of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall
rejoice before the Lord your God seven days.
41 And ye shall keep it a feast unto the Lord
seven days in the year; it shall be a statute for
ever in your generations; ye shall celebrate it
in the seventh month.
42 Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all
that are Israelites born shall dwell in booths;
43 That your generations may know that I
made the children of Israel to dwell in
booths, when I brought them out of the land
of Egypt; I am the Lord your God.
44 And Moses declared unto the children of
Israel the feasts of the Lord.
Questions about the Feasts
Why should we consider the Feasts of the Lord?
What is the difference between the Hebrew calendar
and the Gregorian calendar?
Who comprises the House of Israel?
Why should we concern ourselves with Jewish
traditions?
Why should we consider the Feasts of the Lord?
 Because the Lord said, “even these are my feasts”.
 To remember that the Lord brought the Children of Israel
out of the land of Egypt.
 The Feasts are for all the House of Israel.
 Jesus was of the House of Israel, the Tribe of Judah and
the House of David.
 They are rehearsals for prophesy fulfilled and to be
fulfilled through Jesus Christ.
 Studying the feasts opens up new understanding of
the scriptures.
What are the differences between the Hebrew calendar
and the Gregorian calendar?
• The Feasts of the Lord are on the Hebrew calendar.
• The Hebrew calendar and our calendar, the Gregorian
•
•
•
calendar, work differently.
The Gregorian calendar has twelve months of 30 or 31
days and an extra day every four years.
The Hebrew calendar has 12 months of 29 or 30 days
with a 13th month on a regular pattern.
For this reason the Feasts of the Lord will be at
different points on the Gregorian calendar year by year.
The Hebrew Week and Day
 The Hebrew day begins at sunset and ends at sunset
the next day. This is because in Genesis it says, “And
the evening and the morning were the first day.”
 The seventh day of the week is the Sabbath. On the
Gregorian calendar that means that the Hebrew
Sabbath begins at sunset on Friday and lasts until
sunset on Saturday.
 Saturday at sunset begins their first day of the week.
Who comprises the House of Israel?
Book of Mormon 2 Nephi Chapter 12
50 O ye Gentiles, have ye remembered the Jews, mine
ancient covenant people?
51 Nay; but ye have cursed them, and have hated them,
and have not sought to recover them.
52 But behold, I will return all these things upon your
own heads; for I, the Lord, hath not forgotten my
people.
Who comprises the House of Israel?
Book of Mormon 2 Nephi Chapter 12
75 And now, behold, my beloved brethren, I would speak unto
you: for I, Nephi, would not suffer that ye should suppose that ye
are more righteous than the Gentiles shall be.
76 For behold, except ye shall keep the commandments of God
ye shall all likewise perish; and because of the words which have
been spoken ye need not suppose that the Gentiles are utterly
destroyed.
77 For behold, I say unto you, That as many of the Gentiles as
will repent, are the covenant people of the Lord; and as
many of the Jews as will not repent, shall be cast off;
78 For the Lord covenanteth with none, save it be with them
that repent and believe in his Son, who is the Holy One of
Israel.
Why should we concern ourselves with
Jewish traditions?
For me it is a simple
answer. We believe that
Jesus Christ is the Messiah.
But we have not kept the
feasts. The Jewish people
have actually kept the
feasts all these years. If
they hadn’t we wouldn’t
know anything about
them. We can look to their
traditions for
understanding.

Shabbat
From the Doctrine and Covenants
[Sec 119:7a] And the Spirit saith further: Inasmuch as there has been much
discussion in the past concerning the Sabbath of the Lord, the church is
admonished that until further revelation is received, or the quorums of the
church are assembled to decide concerning the law in the church articles and
covenants,
[Sec 119:7b] the Saints are to observe the first day of the week commonly
called the Lord's day, as a day of rest: as a day of worship, as given in the
covenants and commandments.
[Sec 119:7c] And on this day they should refrain from unnecessary work;
nevertheless, nothing should be permitted to go to waste on that day, nor
should necessary work be neglected.
[Sec 119:7d] Be not harsh in judgment but merciful in this, as in all other
things. Be not hypocrites nor of those who make a man an offender for a word.
Revelation given through Joseph Smith III, April 11, 1887, at Kirtland, Ohio.
How do Jewish people celebrate the
Sabbath?
The Sabbath is the
seventh day of the
Hebrew week. On our
calendar it is Friday at
sunset. The Jewish
people begin with a
ritual in which the
woman of the house
lights two candles and
recites a blessing right
before sunset.

How do Jewish people celebrate
the Passover?
On this day present day Jewish people
prepare for the Passover. In scripture
it is called the day of preparation.
They clean all leavened food out of the
house and get ready for the Seder
meal on the 15th of Nisan.
There is also a Fast of the Firstborn.
The firstborn males fast as
commemoration of the night when
Israel’s firstborn were spared from
death.
The 14th of Nisan is the day the lamb
was killed in Egypt and in the Temple.
It is the day that Jesus Christ died.

30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all
his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a
great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where
there was not one dead.
31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night,
and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among
my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and
go, serve the Lord, as ye have said.
32 Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have
said, and be gone; and bless me also.
33 And the Egyptians were urgent upon the
people, that they might send them out of the land
in haste; for they said, We have found our
firstborn all dead; therefore get ye out of the land
lest we die also.
34 And the people took their dough before it was
leavened, their kneading troughs being bound up
in their clothes upon their shoulders.

For the Jewish people
the 15th of Nisan is the
official beginning of
the Passover, or
Pasach. It lasts for
seven or eight days. In
scripture this is listed
as three separate feasts
which all encompass
Nisan 14 through Nisan
21.
The Seder Meal
•The very first Seder meal was observed the night
before the Children of Israel left Egypt.
•It is a festive and ritual meal to remember the
story of their bondage in Egypt and how God
delivered them.
•It includes wine, unleavened bread, and bitter
herbs. There is also charoset, a mixture of
chopped apples, nuts, spices and wine.
•They used to eat lamb or goat when the temple
was in existence. Now they eat other meats as
well, such as turkey and beef and salmon.

“Some Jewish scholars believe that

the same day the Christ rose from
the dead. Pharaoh’s death
released all ownership rights

Jesus Christ is the First-fruits
of us all
William Hole Magdalene biblepicturegallery.com
Jesus was arisen by the
morning of the first day of
the week, Sunday for us.
There is some controversy
and confusion about which
sabbath is the First-fruits.
The Jews say the Sabbath
of the 15th of Nisan. Others
speculate the weekly
sabbath. Jesus rose on
the first day of the week,
after the weekly sabbath.
How do Jewish people celebrate
the Day of First-fruits?
On the 16th of Nisan, the
day after the Sabbath of
the Feast of Unleavened
Bread, the Jewish people
begin a counting of 50
days until Shavu’ot or
Pentacost. It is called
counting the Omer. This
was an offering of barley.
O.A.Stemler Bess & BruceCleaveland Ruth gathers grain

A word about sabbaths . . . .
The seventh day of every week is a sabbath.
But, there are also sabbaths which can be on any day
of the week. Some of the feast days are considered
sabbaths. The scriptures use the words “Holy
convocations” and “do no servile work”.
Because of this there are different dates between
Shavu’ot for the Jewish people and Pentecost for the
Christian people.
The rabbis chose a feast day sabbath to begin the
count of the Omer and Christians chose the weekly
sabbath as the counting of days to Pentacost.
Perhaps this is the reason for the
discrepancy for the Feast of Firstfruits.
This is the only feast that disappeared from the Jewish
feast days. For them it became the first day of the
counting of the Omer.
This is actually the day that Jesus Christ, the Messiah,
who came to them, arose from the dead after being
crucified. The Jews rejected Jesus Christ as the
Messiah and rejected His resurrection.

The Book of Ruth is read at the Festival of Weeks
 Ruth came from Moab with her motherin-law, Naomi. She gleaned barley and
wheat in the fields of Boaz.
 On the night that the people celebrated
the barley harvest on the barley
threshing floor, Ruth lay at Boaz’ feet
and under his cloak. As a close male
relative to her late husband, he
eventually claimed her as his wife.
 For Christians the story of Ruth and
Boaz is the story of the kinsman
redeemer, which is a type and shadow of
Jesus Christ and the church.

But of that day and hour no one knoweth; no,
not the angels of God in heaven, but my Father
only.
Mark Chapter 13
42 And they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with
power and great glory.
43 And whoso treasureth up my word shall not be deceived.
44 For the Son of Man shall come; and he shall send his angels before him
with the great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect
from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.
45 Now learn a parable of the fig tree. When his branches are yet tender,
and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh at hand.
46 So likewise, mine elect, when they shall see all these things, they shall
know that he is near, even at the doors.
47 But of that day and hour no one knoweth; no, not the angels of God in
heaven, but my Father only.
The Jewish people celebrate Rosh Hashanah for two days. The reason for
this is because a new moon is invisible and so it used to be impossible to
know exactly when it happened. Some people believe that Jesus will
return on Rosh Hashanah, but since it is during a new moon only the
Father in Heaven will know exactly when that should be.
The Spring Feasts were fulfilled exactly to the letter by Jesus Christ. He
died, went into the tomb, and was resurrected exactly on the days
appointed. This was the reason for the feasts. Some people believe that
the Fall feasts will be fulfilled exactly as the Spring feasts were. We may
not know what year, but it will almost be certainly during the Fall feasts.
The things that are prophesied for Jesus Christ’s return are His
appearance to the whole world from the east, His return to the Jewish
people on the Mount of Olives, and the Feast of Tabernacles and the
Wedding Feast.
What was happening to the Children of Israel at
the Feast of Trumpets?
 The Feast of Trumpets was instituted during the forty
years in the wilderness.
 This is the beginning of the civil year, when Israel blew
the shofars. A shofar is a ram’s horn.
 This is when they crowned their kings.
 It is also the start of ten days to the Day of Atonement,
called the Days of Awe. For these ten day the people
repent and make things right with God.
Some people believe that Jesus will come in His Glory,
as King, on the Feast of Trumpets

shall be caught up together
into the clouds with them
who remain, to meet the Lord
in the air; and so shall we be
ever with the Lord.
18 Wherefore comfort one
another with these words.

How do Jewish people celebrate
the Blowing of Trumpets?
 This day is called Rosh
Hashanah for the Jewish people.
It is the first day of the civil year.
This is the day they blow the
shofar, a ram’s horn. They bake
their challah bread round like a
crown. They dip pieces of apple
into honey for a sweet new year.
 One ritual is to walk to some
running water and throw
breadcrumbs into the water.
This is symbolic of getting rid of
sin.

The Gold Plates and the
Blowing of Trumpets
Church History Volume 1 page 17
Joseph Smith received the gold plates from
the angel Moroni on September 22, 1827.
That day was the 1st of Tisheri 5588, The
Blowing of Trumpets, also known as Rosh
Hashanah.
On September 13, 2015 there
will be an Partial Solar Eclipse
on the day before the Feast of
Trumpets, which is also the
new Hebrew secular year.
On October 23, 2014 there was a partial solar
eclipse.
The photo shows a partial
eclipse. I don’t know what the
one on September 13 will look
like.
“Solar eclipses only happen at
New Moon, when the Moon
moves between Earth and Sun
and the three celestial bodies
form a straight line: Earth Moon - Sun.”

This is the reason for the Day of Atonement
Going all the way back
to Biblical times, Moses
descended Mount Sinai
on this day and, upon
seeing the Golden Calf
broke the first set of
Tablets carrying the Ten
Commandments
(Shemot 32:19, Mishna
Taanit 28b).

What was happening to the Children of Israel
at the Day of Atonement?
Julius Schnorr Von Karolsfeld
www.lavistachurchofchrist.org
The Children of Israel had
made and worshipped a
golden calf. Moses pleaded
for them and went up on
the mountain for a second
forty days. When he came
back down with the second
set of tablets the Children
of Israel knew that they
were forgiven for their
great sin.
Was this the Day of
Atonement?
Jubilee years are proclaimed on the
Day of Atonement.
Jubilee is described in Leviticus
chapter 25 when all things are
restored.

Luke Chapter 4
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had
been brought up; and as his custom was he
went into the synagogue on the Sabbath
day, and stood up to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him, the
book of the prophet Esaias. And when he
had opened the book, he found the place
where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he hath anointed me to preach the
gospel to the poor, he hath sent me to heal
the broken- hearted, to preach deliverance
to the captives, and the recovering of sight
to the blind; to set at liberty them that are
bruised;
19 To preach the acceptable year of the
Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it
again to the minister, and he sat down.
Like the scapegoat they tried to cast Jesus
down headlong from the brow of the hill.
21 And the eyes of all those who were in the synagogue, were
fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is
this Scripture fulfilled in your ears.
22 And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious
words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not
this Joseph's son?
23 And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this
proverb, Physician, heal thyself. Whatsoever we have heard
was done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.
24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in
his own country.
25 But I tell you the truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of
Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and
great famine was throughout all the land;
26 But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, of
Sidon, unto a woman who was a widow.
27 And many lepers were in Israel, in the time of Eliseus the
prophet; and none of them were cleansed, save Naaman the
Syrian.
28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things,
were filled with wrath,
29 And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto
the brow of the hill, whereon their city was built, that they might
cast him down headlong.
30 But he, passing through the midst of them, went his way,
Jesus did not read this passage entirely, some of
it is yet to be fulfilled.
Isaiah Chapter 61
1 The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath
anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me
to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,
and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
2 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of
vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
3 To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion; to give unto them
beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise
for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of
righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified.

Yom Kippur?

This is one of the most
important days of the year for
the Jewish people. They fast
for the entire day and look
into their souls, confessing
their sins and repenting.
In the days of the temple it is
the day that the scapegoat
was sent into the wilderness
and thrown off a cliff.
After Jesus read from Isaiah
the people tried to throw
Jesus off the cliff.
The Jubilee Year was to be every 49 years and
was to be announced on the Day of
Atonement.
The theme of the jubilee years is restoration.
A man named Mark Biltz has a theory that the Day of Atonement in the year
2015 is a Jubilee year.
Remembering to count Hebrew calendar years, counting back 49 years,
Jerusalem was restored to Israel on June 7, 1967.
Remembering to count Hebrew calendar years, counting back 49 years four
times, Joseph Smith Jr. had his vision in the grove sometime in the Spring of
1820.

And let them make me a sanctuary; that I
may dwell among them
Exodus chapter 25
1 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
2 Speak unto the children of Israel, that they bring me an offering; of
every man that giveth it willingly with his heart ye shall take my
offering.
3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them; gold, and silver,
and brass,
4 And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats' hair,
5 And rams' skins dyed red, and badgers' skins and shittim wood,
6 Oil for the light, spices for anointing oil, and for sweet incense,
7 Onyx stones, and stones to be set in the ephod, and in the breastplate.
8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
of every man that giveth it
willingly with his heart ye
shall take my offering.

Jesus Christ
and the Feast of Tabernacles
Mark 9
1 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, and
James, and John, who asked him many
questions concerning his sayings; and Jesus
leadeth them up into a high mountain apart
by themselves. And he was transfigured before
them.
2 And his raiment became shining, exceeding
white, as snow; so white as no fuller on earth
could whiten them.
3 And there appeared unto them Elias with
Moses, or in other words, John the Baptist and
Moses; and they were talking with Jesus.
4 And Peter answered and said to Jesus,
Master, it is good for us to be here; and let us
make three tabernacles; one for thee, and one
for Moses, and one for Elias; for he knew not
what to say; for they were sore afraid.
5 And there was a cloud that overshadowed
them; and a voice came out of the cloud,
saying, This is my beloved Son; hear him.

Jesus observed all the feasts
John 7
2 Now the Jews' feast of tabernacles was at hand.
8 [Jesus speaking] Go ye up unto this feast; I go not up yet unto this feast; for
my time is not yet full come.
9 When he had said these words unto them, he continued still in Galilee.
10 But after his brethren were gone up, then went he also up unto the feast,
not openly, but as it were in secret.
14 Now about the midst of the feast Jesus went up into the temple, and
taught.
37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If
any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink.
38 He that believeth on me, as the Scripture hath said, out of his belly shall
flow rivers of living water.
The Feast of Tabernacles Yet to be Fulfilled
Zechariah Chapter 14
3 Then shall the Lord go forth, and fight against those nations, as when
he fought in the day of battle.
4 And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which
is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in
the midst thereof . . .
16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations
which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to
worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of
tabernacles.
17 And it shall be, that whoso will not come up of all the families of the
earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, even upon
them shall be no rain.
18 And if the family of Egypt go not up, and come not, that have no rain;
there shall be the plague, wherewith the Lord will smite the heathen
that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
19 This shall be the punishment of Egypt, and the punishment of all
nations that come not up to keep the feast of tabernacles.
The Jewish people celebrate the Feast of
Tabernacles by living in sukkahs
The Jewish people build
little temporary shelters
called sukkahs to
remember the Children of
Israel in the wilderness.
One or one and a half sides
are open. The roof is of
branches and things that
grew. They must be able to
see the stars through it.
They eat, perhaps sleep,
and generally have a good
time in it .

other citrus fruits. It smells
wonderful.
