Shimla Deputation 1906
In fact Shimla Deputation 1906 was in line with kind of thinking that was developing among the Muslims of India during that time. Muslims had to stand up for their rights and must continue their struggle until they achieved them.
Shimla Deputation 1906 was first systematic attempt from Muslims side to represent their demand before British India. It comprised on 35 Muslim leaders from all over regions in India. It was galaxy of Muslim leaders who were gathered at Shimla to start their struggle for themselves. It was led by Sir Agha Khan and Nawab Mohsin-ul-Mulk served as
Secretary met with Viceroy at Shimla that’s why it was named as ‘Shimla
Deputation’.
Memorandum which was represented before Viceroy was shadow of demands which were the uppermost ideas in minds of Muslim leaders. Muslim leaders during their meeting with viceroy gave this thing priority to ensure importance of Muslims in Sub-Continent. Muslim leaders asked viceroy not to consider Muslims just in numeric number, because they have history of governance in Sub-Continent and they helped British India in their government affairs and they continued their help if British India gave importance to Muslim’s demands.
They also made this thing clear that India is not just homogeneous amalgamated or monolithic political identity. If they want to implement new governance structure like Democratic System, then they must have to give importance to Muslims, because Muslims are not just minority group in India but they have their distinct religious, political, economic and social system and they can’t live under Hindu majority India. British India should have to consider diversity, divergence in view and divergence in outlook while considering any political in India.
Muslim leaders represented their following demands before viceroy;
1) Separate Electorate.
2) Reservation of Muslim’s seats in government jobs.
3) Special representation in viceroy executive council.
4) Representation of Muslims in Municipal and District boards.
5) Muslim’s university in Ali Garh.
Viceroy appreciated Muslims for their efforts to represent their demands in accordance to Indian Congress, which was supporting ideas of Hindus in India. He also promised Muslims to fulfill their demands as soon as possible. So, in this way Shimla Deputation was a startup for Muslims of
India to fight for their rights in British India.
