Lesson Plans using Assure Model Student teachers: Shelly Ann Thomas and Tashana Spencer Subject: Mathematics Topic: Fractions Subtopic: What are fractions (half)? Unit: 1 Term: 2 Grade: 2 Time: 45 minutes Date: Wednesday April 29, 2015. Attainment targets: Students will be able to: - Use the basic operation with numbers and number patterns. - Give and receive information. - Represent and interpret numerical/pictorial information. General Characteristic This lesson is designed for a group of grade 2 primary school students age ranging from 7-8 years. The class has a population of 10 students which comprise of 7 boys and 3 girls. The students enjoy every subject area and are always willing to try and excited to learn. However, 80% of the students in the class are from a low socio economic background. Also, the majority of students belongs to a single parent family. The students learning styles includes auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Students have difficulty maintaining focus because they are easily distracted and talk a lot. Therefore, the lessons have to be tailored to the different learning styles and intelligences. Entry competencies Students should be have basic math, number, adding and subtracting skills. Learning Styles The students learning style varies from auditory, visual and kinesthetic. 20% of the students are visual learners, 10% are auditory learners and 70% are kinesthetic learners. I has the teacher will have to cater to all these different learning styles in order for every child to learn and reach their full potential. Objectives: Cognitive: Students should be able to tell what are fractions in their own words at the end of the lesson. Psychomotor: Students should be able to divide shapes into two equal parts and shade one half at the end of step 7. Affective: Students should be able to distinguish between the numerator and denominator of a fraction at the end of the lesson. Selected Media, Materials and Methods Cartoon: The teacher will use a cartoon picture on fractions to introduce the lesson to the students. Brochure: This will be used to give the students a definition and examples on what are fractions. Orange: The teacher will use the orange to show the students that two halves make one whole. Knife: This will be used to cut the orange in two equal parts. Marker: Will be used to write students responses on the whiteboard. Whiteboard: The teacher will use this for the students to view the interactive powerpoint on and also the students will write their responses on the board. Shapes: Students will divide the shapes into two halves. Crayons: These will be used to shade one half of the shape. Interactive power point: The teacher will use this to ask the students questions about fractions to see if they are grasping the concept. Projector: Will be used to show the interactive power point. Laptop: The teacher will used to run the slides of the interactive power point. Utilize Media and Material: Preview the Materials: The teacher will ensure that the projector, computer and interactive power point are all working correctly. The teacher will also check all the activities and information to ensure that they are effective for the lesson. Preview the Materials The teacher will listen to the interactive power point ensuring that it is hyperlinked correctly and the audio is clear. The teacher will also ensure that the speakers are working as well. The teacher will test the o projector and the computer ensuring their compatibility. Prepare the Materials The teacher will setup the computer and projector before the class. These pieces of equipment will then be turned on and tested. Prepare the Environment The classroom will be arranged so that all students will have a clear view of the projection and will have enough space for group work and to do all the activities. The speakers will be place in an area where all the students will be able to hear the sounds from the interactive power point clearly. Prepare the Learners The teacher will inform the students of the activities planned before the class. The students will also be informed of the evaluation exercises that they will be given at the end of the class. By doing this the students will be comfortable when the class begins. Provide the Learning Experience The teacher will have a discussion with the students and find out their previous knowledge about fractions. The teacher will ask the students questions about sharing with their classmates or friends. The teacher will then ask the students to give examples of some of the things they share after which, the teacher will use some of the students examples and link it with fraction. For example, the teacher will use Shanna’s example about sharing her bulla cake with her friend. The teacher will ask how much of the bulla cake did she gave her friend and how much did she have left. Require Learner Participation Students will be placed into groups to do activities. Students will also be required to do participate in all the activities has the lesson is student centered. Teacher will introduce the lesson by showing the class a cartoon that is talking about fractions. The teacher will tell the students to view the cartoon carefully because they will be asked questions after viewing.. Step: 1 The teacher will have a short discussion with the students about the cartoon that they just viewed and asked the students questions about the cartoon. Step: 2 The teacher will then introduce the topic to the students and find out their previous knowledge about fractions. Step: 3 The teacher will then put the students in five groups and give each group a brochure on fractions. The teacher will then ask the class to read the definition of a fraction from the brochure together. Step 4: The teacher would then take out an orange and show the class and ask them to identify it. The teacher would then ask the class how she can share her orange with one particular student equally. The teacher would then take the students responses and if none of them did not come up with the right answer the teacher will tell them how to share the orange in two equal parts then cut the orange and show them. Step 5: The teacher will then show the class both pieces of the orange and ask if the orange was equally divided. After which the teacher will explain to the students that one part of the orange represents a half and the other part also represents a half. The teacher would then put back both pieces of orange together and show the students how to get back the whole. Step 6: The teacher will then show the students how to write that fraction on the board and then explain to the students what is a numerator and what is a denominator. The teacher will then ask any child to come up to the board and identify the numerator and the denominator. Step 7: The teacher gives each child a piece a shape and ask them to fold it in halves equally. The teacher would then explain that they have divided a whole piece of paper or circle into two equal parts. The teacher would then ask the students to color in one of the two equal parts, and have one student write ½ on the board to show that one out of the two equal parts is now shaded. The teacher will first demonstrate for the students. Step 8: The teacher will show an interactive powerpoint using a projector and white board to the students. Both teacher and students will read the questions together and the teacher will randomly select students to answer the questions. Evaluate and Revise Students will be given an activity for them to write in their books and colour half each given shape to see if they can identify a half.
