PHRGE Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy Internships International Law and Large Scale Land Acquisition Intern The Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (“PHRGE”) at Northeastern University School of Law seeks an intern to serve as research assistant to a project analyzing the applicability of international law instruments to the regulation of Large-Scale Land Acquisitions (“Land Grabbing”) in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The internship will include exploration of one or more of the following areas: A case-study of current regulatory regimes affecting land-grabbing in a country where the practice is particularly impactful; An analysis of what international law instruments, if any, are potentially relevant to regulatory efforts related to land-grabbing; Survey of current efforts to bring such relevant international law instruments (or other regulatory tools) to bear on large-scale land acquisitions; and/or Exploration of a possible research/advocacy role for PHRGE in relation to the regulation of land grabbing and potential strategic partnerships that might maximize the impact of that role. The internship will be deemed to be successfully completed when a mutually agreed upon research product is submitted by the intern and deemed acceptable by the Internship Supervisor. To ensure continuity, PHRGE expects applicants to be willing to commit to working 5-6 hours per week over the course of a semester/quarter. The PHRGE newsletter will showcase PHRGE’s work to promote human rights in the United States and around the world and will also highlight human rights-related news. The intern’s duties will include: Compiling a monthly calendar of upcoming events with the assistance of PHRGE staff. Drafting short articles about PHRGE programs and projects for inclusion in the newsletter. Identifying important human rights-related news and providing electronic links to these stories, Designing the newsletter layout. Working with PHRGE staff to distribute the newsletter electronically. PHRGE Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy Internships Right to Education Intern The Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (“PHRGE”) at Northeastern University School of Law, seeks an intern to serve as research assistant to a project analyzing the impact of possible changes in legislation governing charter schools on the fulfillment of the right to education in the Commonwealth. As part of this research, the intern will assess the feasibility of PHRGE developing a project to contribute to advocacy work on charter school growth from a right to education perspective. The primary elements of the internship will include: Review of past PHRGE research on the legal basis of charter schools in Massachusetts and the impact of the movement, in Massachusetts and beyond. Survey the literature on recent developments in the charter school movement and proposals to change the laws that govern charter schools in the Commonwealth. Interview advocates concerning the state of current advocacy on charter school issues and the possible contribution of a program such as PHRGE; Draft a short, project feasibility study summarizing the current public discussion of charter schools in Massachusetts, identifying potential project partners for a PHRGE project addressing charter school expansion from a human rights perspective and suggesting how, specifically, PHRGE might contribute to such a right-to-education project. The feasibility study and detailed research notes and bibliographical references will be the final products of the internship. PHRGE Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy Internships Right to Water Intern The Program on Human Rights and the Global Economy (“PHRGE”) at Northeastern University School of Law, seeks an intern to serve as research assistant on an interdisciplinary project that explores ways to incorporate human rights principles into the design of an urban water metabolism. This project is a collaboration between PHRGE and the Northeastern University Departments of Engineering and Architecture. The intern will assist with research for a short article on the collaboration due in early July. The intern’s duties will include: Review of past PHRGE research on the rights to water and sanitation under international and domestic law. Review of past PHRGE research on the various Life Cycle Assessment methodologies recommended by the EPA, the UN and the SETAC Foundation for Environmental Education Research and analysis on how best to balance competing human rights issues.
