SLP Faculty Meeting Minutes September 3, 2013 3-4 pm Present: Rhea Paul, Alison Sprengelmeyer, Robin Danzak, Toni Giannone, Susan Kostopoulos Excused: Jessica Preston Minutes of August 26th: No additions or corrections to the minutes. Old Business: Site Visit Preparation Please review material that Rhea will be forwarding to all of you in preparation for the upcoming ASHA site visit. They host on the CAA website questions they could ask and Rhea will send these out to the group. Faculty Expectations Please review the document that outlines faculty workload, academic calendar, promotion and tenure and professional development. Any way that you can involve students in research is encouraged. New Business 2013-2014 Budget – Equipment We can begin ordering equipment for the 2013-2014 budget year. We did order SALT software. We need to start thinking about tests we cannot get at field sites as well as treatment materials, which was a recommendation from our consultatnt, Ellen Reuler, during her recent visit. Robin and Alison agreed to develop an equipment list. Suggestion made to establish a loaner system with another organization, i.e. Speech Academy for equipment we may not have. Alison will work on “the contract” language for the loaner agreement. Rhea suggested we apply to New Haven Reads for books and Robin agreed to investigate this. Suggestion made that maybe NSSLHA can do a book drive and they can be used for the sites. We need to ensure that the lab supplies are secure and, therefore, have developed a schedule of when the lab will be open to students. PBL Info Sessions Rhea asked the faculty if it makes more sense to wait till Spring semester until we are closer to the graduate classes to have Bev Fein attend a faculty meeting re: PBL. It was agreed that the faculty would like to invite Bev to attend the 10/8 meeting to give a brief overview on classes faculty can observe. MS Admissions Issues Rhea talked about the interview process for MS applicants and she would like to conduct them as group interviews with 5 or 6 students in a group and give them a PBL group activity (PT and OT currently does it this way). Admissions is willing to help us and most of the interviews will have to take place on weekends and Rhea is willing to conduct these in conjunction with Admissions for those candidates that meet minimum criteria for admittance. Since students will be applying through CSDCAS, they will have GRE scores. However, internal students may not have GRE scores. Further discussion on this issue is needed. Student References – Discussion took place with regard to student requests to faculty for reference letters and setting a rule that students cannot ask more than one SLP faculty member. SLP Policy to be added to Student Handbook – each student may ask one faculty from SLP and if faculty has been asked by 25% of SLP students, they will be referred to another faculty member in the department. Recruiting for Diversity – Graduate Admissions should be focused on this. It was agreed that the faculty should work to educate students that SLP field involves adult population as well as children.
