Marriage Equity: The debate dividing Australia
It’s not for the first time that there has been a continuous debate about legalising same-sex
marriage.
A Marriage Equity Bill was introduced into Australian Parliament on August 11, to decide whether
Australia should be the Twenty- Second Country to legalise same sex marriage.
Lobbying coordinator for Australian Marriage Equity John Kloprogge says that marriage equity will
not change the nature of marriage
“It won’t change the fundamental nature of marriage, which is about the love and commitment of
two people, “John Kloprogge said
But marriage equity has divided most of the nation, to those who are for and who are against samesex marriage.
Christopher Sharp, a local from Mermaid Waters is in strong opposition of legalising same-sex
marriage, as he believes that Marriage should be between a male and a female.
“ I think a male and female should get marriage, because it easier, its better and you can have more
kids” Christopher Sharp said.
The Turn
Locals, Celebrities, Organisations and governments have had this to say about marriage equity.
The Narrative
Member for Parliament Christopher Pyne introduced the bill of marriage equity on August 11 to
change the rights of marriage to “ two people “ not a “Male and Female”
Prime Minister of Australia Tony Abbott is still standing by his belief that marriage should be
between and a female.
“There is strong support for the existing position …… that marriage is between a Man and a
Woman”
This has lost him a lot of popularity with the Australian Public.
A survey conducted by Australian Marriage Equity demonstrated that between Fifty- Seven and
Sixty – Two Percent are in favour of supporting same sex marriage.
Many celebrities including Beau Ryan, Delta Goodrem and Lisa Wilkinson are placing pride flags
over their profile pictures.
Barack Obama once made this comment about Marriage Equity at a press conference in the United
States of America
“Progress often comes in small increments “Quote found from an external source
Australia is the last developed English Speaking country not to allow same-sex marriage.
On the day of the free vote in Australian Parliament, all those who support same-sex marriage, will
hopefully have their wish given to them.
The right to say, “ I do “
Interview 1- John Kloprogge –
Lobbying Campaigner for Australian Marriage Equity
John Kloprogge
Lobbying co-ordinator for Australian Marriage Equity
Q1. How will Marriage Equity change the means on which two people choose to get married?
Will it make it fairer?
It will definitely make it more fair, but it won’t change the fundamental nature of marriage, which is
the about love and commitment between two people.
Q2. What is a free vote as shown on your website?
A free vote that refers to how we need the liberal / national party to allow their MP’s, their political
they need to free to vote for marriage equality, because the current policy of the party said that they
are not allow for them to vote for marriage equality, the free vote will allow them to vote for the
way they wish to vote, for marriage equity, it’s basically like a conscious vote.
Q3. Will Australian Parliament legalise Same – Sex Marriage?
Yes, they definitely will, but we don’t know when exactly, but we should be able to achieve it
before the end of this year that is if the free vote is granted to the coalition MPs, and if enough MP
of both house can be persuaded to support marriage equity.
Q4. Do you have anything else that you wish to add?
I think, what I would say is marriage equity will not undermine marriage, it will strengthen the
commitment between two people, not only the couples, it will strengthen their families, and it will
benefit the wider society. The other thing i would add is Marriage equity is not an issue, about
religious people versus non-religious people, marriage equity will not undermine religious people it
will not undermine religious people, which their belief is about marriage should be about a man and
a woman , which is the secular institute of marriage.
