Abdul Malik Kassim State Minister for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs, State Government of Penang With less than six weeks to go, Halal Penang, the Halal Facilitation agency of the Penang State Government has already gone into its full momentum to organize the 2nd Penang International Halal Exposition & Conference (PIHEC), a simultaneous event to be held from 25-27 February 2011. The Halal Conference, themed ‘Creating Opportunities through Halal Research’ is scheduled at Eastin Hotel Penang on 26 February 2011 while Halal Expo is a three-day showcase not to be missed at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA) from 25-27 February 2011. PIHEC 2011 is supported by two media partners, the OIC Today Magazine and Millenia Muslim Magazine and sponsored by Dagang.Net, an aggressive Halal information portal provider. A soft launch will take place at PISA right after the Expo ceremony, to signify established collaboration between Halal Penang and Dagang.Net for continuous development in the Penang Halal industry. PIHEC 2011 will continue to enhance Penang’s global branding, with about 120 booths of local and regional exhibitors set to draw domestic and international trade clients, business owners and endconsumers during this time. Extensive range of high quality Halal items will be on exhibit, encompassing life sciences and pharmaceutical products and services other than leatherwear, apparel, seafood and many others. Players from the banking sector such as SME Bank and Affin Bank together with local traders and entrepreneurs are among the exhibitors for Halal Expo this year besides insurance companies and hospitality providers. The Penang International Halal Conference highlights two parallel tracts – ‘Halal R&D and Global Commercialization’ and ‘Halal Science, Innovation & Shariah.’ Panel of speakers will comprise Halal experts from Pakistan, Prince Songkla University and Chulalongkorn University of Thailand, University Science Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia as well as other local universities to introduce innovations and generate solutions in the ever-growing Biotech industry. Halal companies/SMEs, universities and research institutes, government department and agencies, science and business communities as well as Islamic and trade associations constitute the respective guests for the Conference. The staging of PIHEC 2011 will pave the way for the State to be established as a leading international Halal R&D centre. The State Government of Penang, through its Halal facilitation agency (PIHH Development Sdn Bhd, also known as Halal Penang) has been earnestly striving for the growth of local entrepreneurs to have the competitive edge in the global Halal scenes.
