ASSIGNMENT
For this assignment you will create an interactive multimedia tutorial using a power point presentation
presenting your knowledge on figurative language.
This tutorial will explain: SEVEN TYPES OF FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE- SIMILIE, METAPHOR,
PERSONIFICATION, PUN, HYPERBOLE, IDIOM, OXYMORON
Let’s take a look at the seven types of figurative language before you begin to create your powerpoint!
Learning the different types of figurative language!!!
Define each type of figurative language and provide examples for each
SIMILIE: comparing two unlike things using the words “like” or “as”
METAPHOR: comparing two unlike things by saying one thing is the other.
PERSONIFICATION: giving nonhuman things human qualities
PUN: a play on words, either different senses or similar sense or sound of the same word
HYPERBOLE: exaggeration or overstating
IDIOM: an expression that means something other than the literal meaning
OXYMORON: placing two contradictory terms side by side
SIMILE
A simile is type of figurative language that compares two unlike things using the words “like” or “as.”
EXAMPLE: I am as busy as a bee during the day.
METAPHOR
A metaphor is a type of figurative language that compares two unlike things by saying that one thing is the
other.
EXAMPLE: LeBron James is a beast on the basketball court.
PERSONIFICATION
Personification is a type of figurative language that gives something nonhuman, humanlike characteristics.
EXAMPLE: The flowers sung sweet music to my ears.
PUN
A pun is a type of figurative language that is a play on words, either different senses or similar sense or sound of the same
word .
EXAMPLE: I used to be a doctor, but then I lost patients.
HYPEBOLE
Hyperbole is a type of figurative language that over exaggerates.
EXAMPLE: I cried a river during the sad play.
IDIOM
An idiom is an expression that means something other than the literal meaning.
EXAMPLES: Hold your horses while I finish signing the papers.
This really means to be patient while I sign the papers….NOT REALLY HOLD HORSES!
OXYMORON
An oxymoron is a type of figurative language that places two contradictory terms side by side.
EXAMPLE: The baby created a fine mess for me to clean.
EXCELLENT!!!!
You have now learned 7 different types of figurative language.
ASSESSMENT
Now it’s your turn! !!
For this assignment you will :
create an interactive multimedia tutorial using a power point presentation presenting your knowledge on
figurative language
provide definitions of each type of figurative language in your own words.
create examples for each.
provide a picture to go along with each of your examples.

HYPERBOLE, IDIOM, OXYMORON
When you are done, compare your answers to the definitions and examples previously provided and see how
well you did!

Search your computer or the internet for pictures to represent each type of figurative language! You can
google images or go to TeacherTube and YouTube; both sites will provide auditory examples!
