Also find this class and the automated gradeable homework on the McGraw-Hill Connect site (use the URL below for getting onto McGraw-Hill Connect): http://connect.mheducation.com/class/j-wisner-spring2015 Note: Connect does not like Explorer; use Firefox! 1. TEXT: Operations & Supply Chain Management, by Jacobs/Chase, 14th Edition, McGraw-Hill. ISBN: 9781308367804 (includes loose-leaf book + McGraw-Hill Connect card + ebook). OR: ISBN: 9780078024023 (the used hard-back 14th edition with no Connect card or ebook). You can alternately buy an e-book on your own with a McGraw-Hill Connect access code at the Connect URL (shown above). Note: You MUST buy a book and the Connect homework card. DO NOT buy the 13th edition. iClicker Note: You MAY also purchase an iClicker (available in the bookstore—this is a slender, rectangular device with A-E and ON/OFF buttons on the front. Any iClicker model will work, but ONLY an iClicker. I use these in class. But, they are NOT REQUIRED (explained later). To register your clicker: Get on webcampus for my class; click on "Tools", then find the i-clicker registration bar, and click on that. Then put in the 8 letters/numbers (on the back of your clicker below the bar code). Then, you're registered! NOTE: Do not register your clicker on iclicker.com: if you do, I will not be able to match your responses with your name and you will not receive credit. NOTE!! Please, please, please DO NOT buy an iphone/android/laptop iclicker app!! Even though they are cheaper, they often don’t work right or at all. BUT if you do: Download the app from your iphone app store or from googleplay for androids. Web-browsers can go to http://www1.iclicker.com/mobile-polling-iclicker-go, to create an account and work from a laptop. When registering your iclicker app, use the campus zip code 89154 to find your institution. Also, be sure to use the correct student ID (NSHE ID) so you can be correctly synced with your device to my class. You are on your own though, with these things…. 2. POWER POINT SLIDES: Available my WebCampus site. 3. OBJECTIVES: My objectives for you are very simple—I want you to: 1) READ THE BOOK; 2) KEEP UP; 3) DO THE CONNECT HOMEWORK; and 4) PARTICIPATE IN MY CLASS (USING THE i-CLICKER AND WEBCAMPUS DISCUSSIONS). If you do these things, you will do well. My objectives for the course are—to introduce students to the decision making concepts involved in making, storing, and delivering services and products, and to convince students that these things are important; to help students understand these concepts, and to provide a forum for research and written communication concerning operations management topics. The topics to be covered in this course include forecasting, customer service, inventory management, lean production, supply chain management, and quality assessment and improvement in both services and manufacturing. When this class is completed you should be able to: a) identify and explain the major tasks of an operations manager; b) discuss and apply major operations management decision-making tools; c) identify and discuss key issues involved in international operations management and supply chain management; d) work with others to identify issues and prepare solutions in the practical management of operations; and e) analyze and evaluate operations management problems and issues. 4. EXAMINATIONS AND GRADING: A. There will be 3 exams, with NO comprehensive exam. B. There will be no makeup exams without a verifiable excuse. Not taking an exam will result in a grade of zero. If you are going to be out of town during an exam, you must make arrangements with me in advance. 1 C. Exams are multiple choice and based on assigned readings, lectures, speakers and homework problems. Some questions will require calculations. Students are allowed to use a HAND-WRITTEN formula/note sheet during each test (1--8.5X11” sheet of paper, both sides—NOTE: YOU CANNOT STAPLE OR PASTE ANYTHING TO YOUR NOTE SHEET!!). Students WILL BE REQUIRED to show an ID before turning in their exams. Note sheets must also be turned in with the tests. Students can review their exams in my office. They will not be handed back, although I will go over the tests in class, afterwards. D. Coming to class without your iclicker means you will be counted ABSENT. If you are caught giving someone your clicker so you can skip class, you will receive an “F” for the semester—this is cheating; if you are caught bringing someone else’s clicker to class the same rule applies—please DON’T DO IT! E. Grading for the course will be based on the following: 3 exams 80% (26.67% each) Participation 20% (10% is the homework, 5% is the discussion board, and 5% is the clicker) Note on clicker use: I will not use your clicker scores, if it lowers your grade—so, in essence, the clickers are optional or a type of extra credit. If I don’t use your clicker scores, I’ll spread the 5% equally among the 3 exams as shown here: 3 exams = 85% (28.33%); participation = 15% (10% homework, 5% discussions) Note on scores/grades: I will post your scores along with your end of semester grade on my webcampus site only if you give me a 4-digit secret code on your 1st exam which does not contain any part of your name or SSN. Note on discussion board: I will read all your discussions, but may not comment on them. Only one comment per discussion will be allowed/counted, and it must also be thoughtful to count. Do not comment on someone else’s comment. Note that each topic has a turn-off date. NOTE: IT IS YOR RESPONSIBILITY TO WATCH THE DISCUSSION BOARD EACH WEEK AND NOTE THE TURN-OFF DATES!! Note on Connect homework: Each chapter homework has a turn-off date, so MAKE SURE YOU ARE WATCHING THE DUE DATES! The Practice Homework turns on after each chapter homework turns off, and they are identical to the original chapter homework. Also note: I will only count the highest homework score you get for each chapter, so you can use them like practice chapters. F. 5. The following breakdowns will be used for your semester grade: Grade Total % Points A 91.0-100 A90.0-90.99 B+ 87.0-89.99 B 82.0-86.99 B80.0-81.99 C+ 77.0-79.99 C 71.0-77.0 C68.0-70.99 D+/D/D-/F Argh don’t make me!! MORE ON OFFICE HOURS I can often be found in my office during the day. Feel free to drop by anytime, but I can't guarantee I'll be there or be able to talk to you except during my office hours, posted at the top of the syllabus. You can also send questions to me via email, or call me on the phone. 6. OTHER COURSE REQUIREMENTS: A. Homework assignments: these will be listed for each chapter on the McGraw-Hill Connect website. You can submit these as many times as you like until the due date. Even though you are penalized 5% each time you re-submit, I will only count he highest score you attain. We will be discussing some of the homework questions/problems in class; these will be submitted and graded using the Connect website, and this will become ½ of your participation grade (10%). Similar questions/problems will appear on the tests. IF YOU NEED HELP ON ANY HOMEWORK PROBLEMS, PLEASE COME TO MY OFFICE AND WE’LL WORK IT THROUGH. B. Attendance: I will take attendance randomly (USING THE CLICKER) THROUGHOUT EACH CLASS and over the semester, and this will become ¼ of your participation grade (5%). 2 C. Discussions: During the semester, I’ll be asking questions on the Webcampus Discussion Board – your answers will become ¼ of your participation grade (5%). D. Some Final Wisner Class Rules: 7. DO NOT COME TO CLASS LATE OR LEAVE EARLY (this is very disruptive for both me and the other students). If you come after I take attendance or leave before I take attendance, you will be counted as absent. DO NOT TALK DURING CLASS WHILE I’M TALKING!!!! THIS IS VERY DISRUPTIVE TO OTHER STUDENTS. DURING EXAMS, DO NOT WEAR BASEBALL CAPS OR SUNGLASSES, AND DON’T LOOK AROUND (I will interpret this as cheating). DO NOT have your cell phone on OR out on your desk during tests. DO bring your book, power points, scratch paper, calculator and brain to every class, since we will be working problems. DO your own work for the homework and on each test. Bring your ID to each test. STOP ME IN CLASS WHEN YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND SOMETHING!!! COME to class ready to talk, learn something and teach something. This is why we are all here. There is no such thing as a dumb question or comment! OTHER ITEMS OF INTEREST: A. Extra Credit: Each student can earn up to 5% extra credit ON ONE TEST for one assignment during the semester (these points will be added to one of your tests). I will post suggested assignments on WebCampus as the semester progresses. These generally involve going to hear a speaker and then turning in a 2-page critique of the talk. If you turn in someone else’s extra credit, this will be regarded as cheating and will RESULT IN AN “F” FOR THE SEMESTER. This assignment will be graded for accuracy, grammar, and writing skill, so don’t assume you will receive the full amount of extra credit. B. REBELMAIL: By policy, I will be e-mailing students using Rebelmail accounts. Rebelmail is UNLV’s Official e-mail system for students. It is one of the primary ways students receive official university communication such as information about deadlines, major campus events, and announcements. All UNLV students receive a Rebelmail account after they have been admitted to the university. Students’ e-mail prefixes are listed on class rosters. The suffix is always “@unlv.nevada.edu”. C. Students with Disabilities: The Disability Resource Center (DRC) coordinates all academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities. The DRC is the official office to review and house disability documentation for students, and to provide them with an official Academic Accommodation Plan to present to the faculty if an accommodation is warranted. Please bring your plan to me so we can develop strategies that will meet your needs. Your information will be treated confidentially. UNLV complies with the provisions set forth in Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, offering reasonable accommodations to qualified students with documented disabilities. If you have a documented disability that may require accommodations, you will need to contact the DRC for the coordination of services. The DRC is located in the Student Services Complex (SSC-A), Room 143, and the contact numbers are: Voice (702) 8950866, TTY (702) 895-0652, fax (702) 895-0651. For additional information, please visit: http://drc.unlv.edu. D. Academic Misconduct: “Academic integrity is a legitimate concern for every member of the campus community; all share in upholding the fundamental values of honesty, trust, respect, fairness, responsibility and professionalism. By choosing to join the UNLV community, students accept the expectations of the Academic Misconduct Policy and are encouraged when faced with choices to always take the ethical path. Students enrolling in UNLV assume the obligation to conduct themselves in a manner compatible with UNLV’s function as an educational institution.” An example of academic misconduct is plagiarism: “Using the words or ideas of another, from the Internet or any source, without proper citation of the sources.” See the “Student Academic Misconduct Policy” (approved December 9, 2005) located at: http://studentlife.unlv.edu/judicial/misconductPolicy.html. E. Copyright Concerns: The University requires all members of the University Community to familiarize themselves and to follow copyright and fair use requirements. You are individually and solely responsible for violations of copyright and fair use laws. The university will neither protect nor defend you nor assume any responsibility for employee or student violations of fair use laws. Violations of copyright laws could subject you to federal and state civil penalties and criminal liability, as well as disciplinary action under University policies. To familiarize yourself with copyright and fair use policies, you are encouraged to visit the following website: http://www.unlv.edu/provost/copyright. 3 USE THIS! ! F. UNLV Writing Center: One-on-one or small group assistance with writing is available free of charge to UNLV students at the Writing Center, located in CDC-Bldg.3. Although walk-in consultations are sometimes available, students with appointments will receive priority assistance. Appointments may be made in person or by calling 895-3908. The student’s Rebel ID Card, a copy of the assignment (if possible), and two copies of any writing to be reviewed are requested for the consultation. TAKE YOUR EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS HERE. More information can be found at: http://writingcenter.unlv.edu/ G. Religious Holidays Policy: Any student missing class quizzes, examinations, or any other class or lab work because of observance of religious holidays shall be given an opportunity during that semester to make up missed work. The make-up will apply to the religious holiday absence only. It shall be the responsibility of the student to notify the instructor no later than the last day at late registration of his or her intention to participate in religious holidays which do not fall on state holidays or periods of class recess. This policy shall not apply in the event that administering the test or examination at an alternate time would impose an undue hardship on the instructor or the university which could not be avoided. H. Tutoring -- The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides tutoring and academic assistance for all UNLV students taking UNLV courses. Students are encouraged to stop by the ASC to learn more about subjects offered, tutoring times and other academic resources. The ASC is located across from the Student Services Complex, #22 on the current UNLV map. Students may learn more about tutoring services by calling (702) 895-3177 or visiting the tutoring web site at: http://academicsuccess.unlv.edu/tutoring/ SOME FINAL COMMENTS ABOUT THIS COURSE: THIS CAN BE AN ENJOYABLE AND REWARDING CLASS. To do well, you MUST keep up, do the homework, take notes, read the chapters, and participate in the class. If you don’t do these things, the course will be difficult for you. There will be a number of people dropping or doing poorly because they have not done the things I have discussed above. If you keep up, do the homework, come to class, DO THE READING and participate, I think you’ll enjoy the course and you will do well. Many students have told me they learned a lot from the class, they put these things to good use in their jobs, and they liked the course very much. Good luck and please call me or come by!! Finally, I want you to do very well in the class. I have no problem giving everyone an A, and I think YOU CAN MAKE AN A if you keep up and do what I have recommended.
