Food and Nutrition 2015-2016 Syllabus Susan Biba susan.biba@fillmorecentral.org Food and Nutrition is a full year course. This course takes you beyond what you learned in 9th Grade FCS and explores some previous food-related topics more deeply. Our textbook is called Food For Today and will be required reading. You will be responsible for the care (this means a book cover) and use of your assigned textbook. There is a Food Lab Fee of $25 for this class. You may pay the food lab fee to Fillmore Central Public School. The 1st semester of this course focuses on nutrition, food origins, food safety, and dietary issues. There will be fewer labs in the first semester of the course (than you might expect). During the 2nd semester, we focus on the preparation of many different types of foods and labs are more frequent. Grading: Grading in this class will be divided into two categories, Formative (or practice work) and Summative (or assessment work). While points are assigned to reflect the relative importance of each assignment, ultimately, no more than 20% of a student’s score will come from Formative assignments. Summative assessments will account for at least 80% of a student’s final grade in the class. Grading in this class includes the following components: Assignment Category Formative Assignment type Bellringers Point Value 5 points Formative Study Guides 20 points Formative Vocabulary Worksheets 10 points Formative News Article 10 points Formative Worksheets or some quizzes 10 points Document1 Comments These may or may not be graded, but written work is always read. These may or may not be graded. They are graded for completeness only. Because you have access to your textbook and notes for this part of your work, there is no reason for you to have wrong answers. Take the time to look up the answer or to ask for help. See the separate sheet on Study Guide Expectations for more information. A vocabulary worksheet that applies to the essential vocabulary list for the section will be due the day of the unit or chapter test. Expect to turn in 1 or 2 per grading quarter. Article should be current and you need to complete a short summary sheet that explains why this news is important for people who eat food. Worksheets may not always be graded, but they can be useful to see how well you know or understand the material. Other assignments like this might be a video guide or a short quiz! 3/14/2016 1 Assignment Assignment Category type Summative Tests Point Value 100 points Summative Major Quiz 30—70 points Summative Quick Quiz Summative Projects 10—25 points 50—150 points Summative Other items will vary Summative Lab Grades 25 points Summative Final Exam 200 points (2 times the value of unit tests) Comments Most tests will be on Angel and worth 100 points each test. Bonus questions may be included and will vary in the amount of points given. Bonus points will not raise a test score above 100%. Read your textbook as most test questions come from there! Occasionally, a longer quiz will replace a test for a particular segment. Point value may vary from 30 to 70 points, based on the quiz. This might be a pop quiz (or one you have prepared for) over a short section of material. Projects might include PowerPoint presentations or other project. One project we have is the Food Record Project, which uses the USDA SuperTracker program to record food eaten. Point value for projects will vary with the difficulty of the project. Usually, they will be in the 50 to 150 point range. The nature and value of these assignments will vary with the unit we are studying. Assignments of this type might include a reflection paper on a video, news story or field trip. Or it might be a poster. Or something else… The point value for labs may vary for some labs. You must take an active part in the lab in order to be eligible to turn in a lab sheet. You must turn in a lab sheet to get credit (and a grade) for a lab. Lab sheets need to be turned in immediately or their value is lost. See me about the possibility of making up lab assignments if you are ill. The final exam for this course will be given during the time allotted at the end of the semester. It will follow the same format as the regular tests in the class. It will cover all of the chapters we have covered during the semester. The final exam is usually twice as long as a regular exam and is worth twice as much. No re-takes on final exams! Retakes and Remediation: Retakes are allowed on unit tests, but the retake score WILL BE the score that goes in the grade book. You will be required to do some extra study (remediation) before taking the test a second time. In most cases, remediation will consist of the completion of a more extensive vocabulary work sheet prior to re-taking a new test on the same material. Other Grading Policies: Other grading policies will follow the guidelines in your student handbook. Contact: You may contact me during the school day or via school email (above).
