In the Fourth Sunday of Easter the Gospel presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd. This Sunday’s Gospel of Saint John, presents Jesus as the Good Shepherd clearly. He knows his sheep and his sheep know him. He gives life for his sheep and his sheep follow him. Jesus is our Good Shepherd and we must work to follow obediently, with joy and honesty. In the Catholic Church since antiquity, we identified our spiritual leaders as shepherds, those who are at the head of the Church. They assume the role of representing Jesus Christ leading the flock. On this fourth Sunday of Easter, let us pray for our pastors, our shepherds to be good shepherds. Pray for Pope Francis who is our universal shepherd. The Pope has a great responsibility in leading the Church, he faces many challenges. The Pope also has enemies, whether we believe it or not, groups who speak ill of him, misrepresent his words and present him badly in the press. This Good Shepherd Sunday, let us pray that the Lord Jesus, the Good Shepherd conserve the Pope and keep him free from harm and danger. Today, let us also pray for our Bishop, the Shepherd of our Diocese, Bishop Larry Silva. On July 21, 2015, it will be the 10th anniversary of the ordination of Bishop Larry Silva as the fifth bishop of the Roman Catholic Church in the Diocese of Honolulu. We have all been witnesses throughout these 10 years and have seen Bishop Larry Silva managing his flock with such care. A bishop is the spiritual leader of a large portion of the people of God is appointed directly by the Pope and is considered a direct successor of the Apostles. The bishop is the chief of the priest, who appoints them, assists them and is caring for them. The bishop is the great shepherd who lays down the guidelines for pastoral action to develop in his diocese and fulfill the mission of extending the Kingdom of God throughout the earth. Pray for our Bishop Larry Silva that the Lord Jesus continue to fill him with grace and assisting him in his decision making. In 1963 Pope Paul VI designated Good Shepherd Sunday as World Day of Prayer for Vocations. Sunday, April 26 is the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, so we are invited to pray for vocations to the religious life and the priesthood. We are in need of many holy priests, not only in the Diocese of Honolulu but in the world. Presently, the parish of Saint John the Baptist has no seminarian nor a candidate to the religious life. What a wonderful thing it would be if amongst our community we would have people who chose the vocation of entering religious life or the priesthood. Let us pray for vocations and support those who choose to follow the Lord. It is the fourth Sunday of Easter. It is the day of the Good Shepherd in this 2015. It is time to pray for the Pope, our bishop, priests, deacons and religious. It is time to pray for vocations. May God bless you today and always. Fr. John F Quintero Parish Administrator
