Thebes is situated in a plain, between Lake Yliki to the north, and the Cithaeron mountains, which divide Boeotia from Attica, to the south. Its elevation is 227 yards above mean sea level. It is about 31 miles northwest of Athens, and 62 miles southeast of Lamia. Stable Food Source What kind of agriculture did and food did your city state produce and eat? o o o o o o o o o o o o o The women would kneed bread. The gods say that every man is entitled a burial that will allow him to pass to the afterword. Thebes is associated with Greek ledged and religion. They believed in many gods. Architecture What kind of buildings, temples, and public works were produced? o Palatial buildings of two stories with wall paintings, greater fortifications, workshops, stone built aqueducts with terracotta pipes. o Aqueducts means to transport water from one place to another o Fortified buildings with: o Rock cut fountains o Courtyards o Walls and drains Social Structure What kinds of jobs did the people of your Thebes do and what were the social levels? Some of the jobs Thebans had were… Barber Soldiers Farmers Social Levels The social levels starting from the top where Kings, soldiers, artisans, shop keepers, and then slaves. The Arts What kind of culture or forms of expression did your city have? o o o o They had jugs, jewelry boxes, vases, bowls. They had many animals and people on the vases and bowls. They had many statues. Music included playing lyre, flute, Writing What kind of written language did Thebes use and how did they record the information? The Theban alphabet is often called "The Runes of Honorius" It is also known as the 'Witch's Alphabet'. It was invented by Honorius of Thebes. Direction of writing is left to right in horizontally lines The Theban writing was used by witches, to write spells, inscriptions, and other texts It disguises the meaning of a text and also gives it a mystical quality Technology What kinds of tools, weapons, and inventions did your Thebes create? They used the wheel barrow. A weapon they used was the Crossbow called the gastraphetes. . They used bronze shields to use in battle. They came up with different medicines. Legacy What was the lasting impression Thebes left? Thebes although developed came to a end in 290 BC after the Thebes was destroyed by Sulla, in the war against Rome. Half of its territory was given to Delphians, for compensation of theft of the Oracle.
