School Of Rock
Visual style
The lighting used in School Of Rock throughout the film is quite natural as the director tries to
incorporate the lighting used in the classroom to look normal as the light is coming through the
windows and then lighting up the classroom. Also artificial lighting is used as normally in classrooms
they have lighting on the ceiling and the director uses this to help with the lighting so money is saved
and that the classroom setting looks real possible.
As you can see in this still shot from the film that a lot of light is coming through the windows, I know
this because the shadows on the floor in front of the window suggest that light is shining in. also the
artificial lighting is being used on the ceiling to create an even more natural lighting. I know this
because the lighting is bouncing of the desks.
Towards the end of the film when the band plays the lighting used is rigged and the camera doesn’t
have to worry about catching the rigged lighting in the shot as it is a part of the performance as this
picture shows
The camera use throughout the film uses close up shots to medium shots. In the classroom scene
towards the begging of the film the use of the camera shoes the facial reactions towards the teacher
MR.S after what he has said. Towards the end of the film when the band plays the camera moves
along with and in time with the music.

This is a clip to show how the camera moves with the music, smoothly.
Setting
The setting of the film is a school as all of the sets reflect this. Most of the action takes place in a
specific classroom and we see all of the things that we associate with classrooms within the set,
from work displayed on the walls to the central focus of the room, the blackboard. When the film
changes location, it is story specific so when the band is entered into a big competition, we change
from the school to the auditorium where the concert is held.
Storyline and Narrative
The story of School of Rock follows a classic structure of a character who society seems to have
forgotten about, a man who wants to follow his dream of being a rock star but who has let these
dreams slide and has become a slob. He, to earn extra money, impersonates a supply teacher at a
local private school and through running a music class finds in the kids a chance to make a difference
and give them dreams such as his.
The narrative is not complex and is quite linear as we follow Ned (Jack Black) and his development
from a slob to a respected teacher and friend.
Representations
Ned is stereotypical representation of a rock star as he is a bit dirty, unreliable, long hair and he’s a
bit overweight. Also the children live up to the typical stereotypes of children as there is a fat child, a
ginger child with spots and a Chinese guy that’s really good at maths.
Coronation Street
The soap is set in Manchester in the northern England. As the soap is set in a street the artificial
lighting only needs to be indoors as outside the sun light is used and the camera work makes the
soap feel real as possible as the effect of the outside lighting creates the real effect of being outside
rather that in a studio were artificial lighting will need to look like as if it is real. The camera work is
often wide and close up shots, two reaction shots so you can tell the reactions of the actors with a
close up shots pointing at them both.
this is a typical medium- wide shot that gets
everybody in the shot.
The representation of the characters of a soap is really important. In corranation street you have got
the people who are really looked up to and others that are not looked up to, e.g carla connor is the
manager of the factory so everybody that works for her looks up to her as they don’t want to get
sacked. The younger characters in the soap are protrayed as little children because they look younger
than they are.
The platforms that you can watch this on is the tv and also on iplayer that can be viewed on a tablet or
even your phone.
Advert – the asranout beans
This is a link to the advert if you havent seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WoM2bHfr48
The advert was design to sell beans, yet the advert does not see any visual represantayion for the
product until the end. However the myth to eating beans is that when you eat them you can pump so
whrn in the advert when the austranout is hiding there is silence then all of a sudden he pumps you
imeaditely know that the advert has got to do with beans. The lighting is reflective of a sciece fiction
movie with the dramatic sound and music that has been placed in the movie. However when viewing
the advert you can see the shadows on the helmets. The effects are polished and profesinal, the
music is orchestral and fits the scene well.
