What is Africana Studies?


Study of Africans & people of African descent in
Africa, the Caribbean, North & South America, & Europe
Interdisciplinary approach that allows students to
explore different methodologies & disciplines
 Teaches
students to think analytically and critically
 Helps students to make connections among global,
national, and local contexts
 Exposes students to the social, historical, and political
contexts of the Black experience across space and time
 Prepares students to function effectively in a
multicultural society & diverse international
environments

One required course: AFRI 2000 (Introduction to
Africana Studies)
Plus 4 elective courses from University Curriculum

 Some faculty waive prerequisites for Africana Studies
