Daragh the Engineer.
Our class walked into school thinking it was just
a normal day but we were in for a treat. A man
named Daragh who works in Intel was coming
for a visit. He was an engineer, an electrical
engineer. He came in to talk about engineering.
Daragh didn’t just tell us about electrical
engineering but all kinds of engineering. At the
end he gave us a few sheets of paper and we had
to try to build our own bridges. We had to stack
our books up and put the sheets of paper across
them, then see how many cubes we could put on
it before it fell. We had great fun doing this.

Christmas Report from Senior
Infants
The children of Senior Infants have been very
busy preparing for their nativity play: WhoopsA-Daisy-Angel - and are very excited about their
performance on the 17th of December.
The children made some snowflakes and Advent
wreaths to decorate our classroom for Christmas
and together we made a lovely Christmas scene
with snowy mountains, a blue sky and children
wrapped in woolly clothes enjoying the festive
season.
Here are some of the Santa letter's that the
children have been busy writing:
Cake sale
To Santa,
We had a fund raiser for the Philippines. We had
a fund raiser for them because the typhoon hit
their country. We had a cake sale for them.
Harry and I were on the drink stand. It was 20c
for a drink. A lot of people bought it. Mom and I
made a cake. There were lots of things that
people made. They made rocky road cakes, buns
and lots of different cakes. I came home with 5
rocky road. We made lots of rice krispie buns but
I didn’t like them because there was dark
chocolate in it. We made over 200 of them. All
of my cake was gone before home time. I got a
bun for 20c and it was nice. Harry and I had to
shake a box to get money. We got over €1000
which was cool.

Second Class
We have learned about lots of old toys in second
class and we have an ‘Old Toys’ shelf in our
classroom. My favourite toy is the Raggedy Ann
doll from the 1920’s. I also like Barbie dolls. Did
you know Barbie was created over 50 years ago?
I wish I could play with old toys all of the time!

It’s Not Fun to be a Robot
On Sunday morning
countries buy produce with the Fairtrade sticker
it means we get a fair amount of money. I am
very proud of my tea.
I woke up with a fright –
By: Katie McMenamy
I had turned into a robot over the night!
Me as a Robot
I was made out of metal, tin and wire
I woke up this morning not as myself,
I thought I was going completely haywire
I thought I was like some sort of elf,
I went downstairs and talked to my mother
But then my body was as still as a pot,
And she said, “Don’t worry, my sugar plum
butter
When I looked in the mirror, I was a robot!
I went downstairs to get something to eat.
“You’ll be OK, I promise, it’s fine,
“Just go to school, it will be divine.”
My sister said I looked like a freak.
I tried to write but my pencil kept falling.
My mom and dad were a little bit shocked
I looked at my copy and it was appalling.
When I told them I had turned into a robot.
On the playground, the kids kept screaming,
I can tell you my day was not appealing!
I went to see my friend today.
The day was over, I rested for a while,
She told me I should go away.
But then, in the morning, I woke with a smile
She didn’t know who I was
I was not made out of metal, tin or wire
So I just stood there … and paused.
I was flesh and blood, at least for a while!
I went home and cried all day.
By: Daniel Hudson-Dolan
Then my bolts started to fade away.
Sivapackiam’s Diary
I looked at my skin and I wasn’t metal:
Dear Diary,
Today was the best day. A company called
Fairtrade came to our town and
bought some of our produce. This means we
have made more money. But I still have to get up
at five a.m. to get the kids ready for school and
still I have to look for firewood in the dark, but
life is better. At least we eat more vegetables and
other interesting foods. If people in wealthy

Sivapackiam’s Diary
Dear Diary,
I had a lot of things to do today. First I went tea
plucking. After I’m finished tea plucking I carry
15 kg of tea to be weighed 5 kilometres away.
Scoil Eoin Phóil Times : Christmas Edition 2013
The tea must reach get there in 7 to 8 hours or it
will go off. After that I still have to collect all of
the firewood and the cooking and fetch water. I
earn about 1,500 rupees a month which is
€17.80. If it’s too wet or too dry it can ruin crops
and our pay will go down. With the money I get
I pay for food, clothing and transport for my
family. The nearest doctor is over 100 km away
and we can’t afford medicine.
By: Leah Traynor
Sivapackiam’s Diary
Dear Diary,
I wake up and it is still dark. I get lunch ready
for my four children for school. Then I go to
pick up my bag and go to the tea-leaves farm.
When I got there I started to pick tea in rows so
it would be easy to know how much I did. Then I
went to the factory with a 15 kg bag. The factory
is 5 km away. I got my wage and headed back
home. I needed to travel 5 km back. When I was
at home I went to fetch water, get firewood and
do cooking – it’s my least favourite thing. When
I did that I was tired. My dream is to have a
better life and to have a vegetable farm, to be
healthy….
 In our classroom, we have a shop.
We take turns buying
and selling lots of food. Some of
the food is very expensive!
It is getting close to Christmas and we
have been preparing:
 In art, we made clay candle
holders, snowmen for our poem
‘An Sneachta’ and Christmas
stockings.
 We wrote letters to Santa. Here
are some examples:
Dear Santa,
Thank you for my
toys last year.
How is Rudolph?
Can I have
Skylanders?
Dear Santa,
How are you?
Can my dog
have a big
teddy? Thank
you.
Love from,
Charlie.
Love from,
Katie.
Dear Santa,
Can I have a 3DS
and a batman
game please?
Thank you.
Happy Christmas.
Dear Santa,
Are you well? I
hope lots of
children get
presents.

Senior Infants. The Senior Infants bought loads
of muffins and books. They looked very happy!
At our Fundraiser we had a children’s raffle and

win a prize. A lot of mums helped out and they
worked really hard. Later on lots of adults started
arriving in, they bought loads of muffins,

TAG-RUGBY
One day there was a typhoon in the Philippines.
When our school heard about it we came up
With an idea about having a fundraiser. We had
rice crispy buns, cakes, lemonade and a book
sale. We held it in the school hall. Our class had
to arrive at school at 8:30 to 8:45 to organise
everything. Senior infants came up first and they
bought cakes etc. Then the other classes came
and moms and dads came to the fundraiser also.
Many moms came to help on the day. We had a
lot of fun doing it and planning it. During our
break time we bought some cupcakes. Then we
went back to sell more things. 6th class came last
to the fundraiser and they bought a lot of things.
Some adults had a go of the adults raffle. We
made a lot of money for the Philippines. We
raised over 1300 euro for the Philippines.
On the 6/11/2013,Ms. O’Gorman’s fourth class
started tag-rugby. Our first coach Gareth showed
us the tactics of tag-rugby. He showed us how to
place the ball, pass the ball, how to run onto the
ball and how not to do a forward pass. He sorted
us into six groups and made us run onto the ball,
after that we played in teams against each other.

Clodagh came to the gate with the trophy. Then
we went down to the gate and we got to hold the
trophy. Then we went back to our seats and
cheered for the next match. We then got into our

March 1857 on the Isle of White to Irish
parents. His dad James Clarke was a
sergeant in the British army.
The family moved to South Africa and
later to Dungannon, Co Tyrone where
Clarke grew up from the age of seven,
attending St Patricks national school.
In 1878 Clarke joined the Irish
Repulican Brotherhood(IRB) the secret
revolutionary organisation. In 1881 his
actions with the IRB forced him to move
to America.
On a trip to England in 1883 he was
captured and sentenced to life
imprisonment for attempting to blow up
London Bridge as part of the Fenian
Dynamite Campaign.
Clarke served 15 years in many different
British prisons under a false name of
Henry Wilson. He was released in 1898.
Prison life was extremely tough for an
Irish Republican in England and when
Clarke was released he looked much
older than he was.
He then moved to Brooklyn in the
United States where he married
Kathleen Daly who was 21 years
younger than him. In 1906 they moved
to a farm outside New York.
In 1907 they moved back to Ireland and
he opened a tobacco shop. Clarke
became very involved in the IRB.
He turned the IRB into a very militant
organisation and as its leader he brought
in new people including Padraig Pearse.

formed and Clarke took a keen interest.
He didn’t get involved as his criminal
past would have attracted too much
attention.
11.Clarke and Sean MacDermott formed
the military committee of the IRB in
1915 to plan what became the Easter
Rising.
12.In early 1916 Clarke and the IRB joined
forces with Padraig Pearse and the ICA.
These men along with five others
became the seven signatures of the
Proclamation of the Republic.
13.Clarke was the first to sign the
Proclamation and it was said he would
have been declared Commander-inchief, but he refused as he wished to be
an ordinary soldier.
14.He was stationed in the GPO during the
Easter Rising and following surrender
he was held in Kilmainham Jail until his
execution by Firing Squad on the 3rd of
May 1916 at the age of 59.
15.Before Clarke was shot he asked his
wife Kathleen to give this message to
the Irish people. ‘’I and my fellow
signatories believe we have struck the

Ireland will strike, will win through. In

A Christmas Story
by Ben Flanagan
At Christmas people put up Christmas trees.
Then they decorate them with tinsel, baubles,
ribbons and an Angel on the top. Santa sends
videos to tell us if we are naughty or good. We
leave out a mince pie for Santa and a carrot for
Rudolph. We go to bed early. Sometimes Santa
gets stuck in the chimney. When he gets down
the chimney, if you are awake, the sandman puts
sand in your eyes. When Santa leaves, he flies
away in his sleigh. The reindeer pull the sleigh
along.
A Christmas Story
by David Sonowo
I love Christmas, it is so much fun.
My favourite thing about Christmas is opening
presents and going to my cousin’s house. On
Christmas Day my sister and I are the first
people in the house to go and get
our presents. But we are not
allowed to open our presents until
everyone is up.
On our Christmas tree in school we
have a big star and lots of baubles.
Soon we will have a Christmas test.
I hope I get 100%. In school we are
having a Christmas play. I will be a
pig and a star.
Jack’s favourite Christmas by
Darragh Carter
One cold day in a nice warm house, lived a little
eight year old boy called Jack. For Christmas
Jack wished that he would get Skylanders swap
force and a surprise. On the 23rd of December
Jack was extremely excited, “I can’t wait for
Christmas”, gasped Jack. He put up his
Christmas tree. Then on Christmas Eve Jack was
fast asleep, so he did not hear the reindeer land
on his roof. Santa tiptoed into his sitting room.
Santa put his presents under his tree. On
Christmas Day Jack saw the toys that he asked
for. But to his surprise he got the whole
Skylanders collection. Soon he was playing
away with his Skylanders. It was his best
Christmas ever !!!

Fund Raiser
On Friday our class and the other fourth class
had a sale for the Philippines. All the classes in
our school had twenty minutes to buy something.
There were other things like a book sale, a

raffle, and drinks. The other fourth class was in
charge from the start of school to little break. We
were in charge from the end of little break to big
break. We both worked together at 2 o’clock to 3
o’clock. We all worked really hard
4th class Fund Raiser for the
Philippines
We held a fund raiser for the Philippines because
a big wave destroyed all of their houses and we
wanted to help them. We had a cake sale, book
sale, a raffle, a lemonade stand and some novelty
games. I was working at a cake stand. Loads of
Junior Infants wanted to buy things at my stall. I
bought loads of yummy items. I bought a picture
for my mam. I also bought a book. So far we
have raised 1300 euro. We hope the Philippines
will be happy.

Fund Raiser Report
I was excited on Friday the 29th of November
because we, the 4th classers ,were selling books
and cakes for the Philippines in Scoil Eoin Phoil.
I was in Ms Ryan’s 4th class. On Thursday the
28th we were preparing Rice krispie buns. On
Friday the 29th , I was on a stand where there
were lots of chocolate buns. One of the people at
the cake and book sale gave me 2 euro and all
the things at the table were 10 cent but that was
not too hard for me. I calculated in my head what
was 2 euro minus 10 cent was and it was 1 euro
and 90 cent. When the sale was over we reached
€1300. There is still some change to be counted

Old Toys
A spinning top is from the olden days and is still
used today. But now is a time when children
have 3DS’s and other types of toys. If we look
around, we can still get old toys in a toy shop
any day. They are great fun!

A Recipe for Friendship
Old Toys by Ms. Fadian’s 2nd class
In school, we learned about old toys. My
favourite toy that I learned about is the Rubik’s
Cube from the 1970’s. I like the Rubik’s Cube
because it is a fun game to play. We have one in
room 13. A lot of people had Rubik’s Cubes in
their houses in the olden days.

Mars by Charlie Owens, Ms. Fadian’s 2nd class
Once upon a time, there was a little planet called
Mars. The world spun around him but Mars only
saw Italy once a week for some reason, I don’t
know why! His mum shouted, “Come in for
dinner!” so they chatted about only seeing Italy
once a week. “I wonder why you can only see
Italy once a week?” thought Mars. They chatted
and chatted until it was bedtime. Then, when
Mars was in bed, he looked out the window. He
saw the world and saw that the moon went up
and the sun went down. He fell asleep. The next
day was Friday so he jumped out of bed and put
his coat on and went out and saw Italy. “Mum!”
he shouted, “I see Italy. Come here, quick!”.
“I’m coming”, said mum, “Wow!” Then the
world kept spinning and it was so cool, so he
went to see his friend Venus. “Hi!” said Venus,
“Let’s play! What would you like to play?” Mars
thought for a while and said, “Hide and seek! I
saw Italy today!” Venus told Mars that everyone
could see Italy all of the time and that there must
be something wrong with his eyesight. So Mars
went to the glasses shop with his mum. “Hi, Sun,
how are you?” asked the worker there, “Are you
getting sun glasses?” Mars told her that he
wanted glasses to wear all of the time, to help his
sight. “Oh, look at those ones, they’re cool, I’ll
get those!” So he did and went outside and from
then on he could see Italy every day.

Our Trip to Castletown House
We went to visit Castletown House in October. It
was a special day out. First, we did a tour of the
house and it was fantastic. We dressed in
traditional clothes. William Connoly asked for
the house to be built and we could see the
Obelisk from the living room window. William
lived in the house until he moved to another
house, as Castletown began to fall apart. We
used washboards and mangles, which we learnt
about in school. Outside, we went on a lovely
nature walk. We found conkers, leaves and
acorns. We were back in school at half 12. It was
a great day!

Under 11 Boys : Leixlip Schools’
League.
Congratulations to the boys from 5th and 6th class
who won the U11 Leixlip Schools League. The
final between Scoil Eoin Phóil and Scoil Bhríde
was played on the 3rd December on the GAA
pitch.
The boys had beaten Scoil Mhuire, Scoil Uí
Dhálaigh, Scoil Bhríde and Scoil San Carlo to
reach the final.
Their unbeaten record continued with a fantastic
win over the boys of Scoil Bhríde. Their
coaches, Ms. Fadian and Mr. Cullen (Darragh’s
Dad) were delighted with the skills displayed in
what proved to be a fairly easy win over their
opponents. The team was as follows:
Adam Adetoro, Darragh Melville, Jack Dillon
Rampersaud, Timmy Ibrahim, Harry Farrell,
Nelson Fotso, Keith O’Callaghan, Luke Mahon,
Donal Lawlor, Darragh byrne, Daire Cullen
Alexander Reidy and Tobi Oyekan.
Well done boys!

Theseus & The Minotaur
As soon as the door shut tightly behind him,
Theseus tied the string to the door. Bravely, he
turned and walked into the foul smelling, dark
maze. Like a mouse, he crept down the bumpy,
tough path.
Theseus saw the minotaur standing on a
pile of bones. Its breath smelled of rotten flesh,
and its horns were as sharp as a razor sword.
Theseus sneaked up on the repulsive beast, and
plunged his sword into his head. The minotaur
fell down dead to the ground. Theseus turned to
go, but he had lost the string. He crawled and
fumbled about on the rough gravel.
When he thought all hope was lost,
suddenly he felt a long wiry piece of thread and
recognised a big ball of string. Relieved, Theseus
made his way back, practically crying with joy.
As the sun shone at the entrance of the maze,
there he saw all the children standing at the
doorway waiting to go home.

Christmas
Christmas is the time of year,
That’s full of happiness and cheer.
Running around in the snow,
I think I am good and want Santa to know.
Surprise, surprise Christmas has arrived.
Turkey for our dinner today, hip hip hooray!!!
Making snowmen for a school play,
Asleep we go, till the next day!
Santa has gone until next year,
Everybody is full of cheer.

History Projects
In 6th Class we recently completed some History
projects. We were allowed to pick any topic
from the topics we had covered so far. Rory
chose to base his project on From Stone to Metal
which is the Bronze Age. Emma did her project
on Irish Monasteries. Some of the other children
in the class chose to do theirs on topics such as
The Native Americans and archaeologists. We
all enjoyed doing our projects and learned a lot
from them.

Happiness and joy in the New Year,
Running outside in the freezing snow,
Icicles hanging from the trees
Something special, a gift for you.

Merry Christmas!!!
Around the world children are shouting,
Santa is coming, Merry Christmas!
Christmas is coming!
Having fun!
Evenings get warmer inside, when the fire is
lighting.

Tag Rugby
6th class began playing tag rugby five weeks ago.
Gareth and Chris from Barnhall Rugby Club
come in each week to train us. Chris is from
New Zealand. The two sixth classes are together
for the session. Gareth and Chris helped us by
giving us a lot of tips on how to score a try and
to outrun the other team as well. We had a lot of
fun learning this new skill. They are also
organising a blitz between Scoil Eoin Phoil,
Scoil Mhuire and Scoil Bhríde after Christmas.
We were so excited when they told us about it
and can’t wait to show off our new skills.

The big, red man is coming today
With a big, red sack on his back.
The sleigh bells will be ringing
And the ornaments will be jingling.

And when he comes we will leave out tonnes of
buns!
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas.
Hope you have a good one
And remember to have lots of fun!!
