Dear Students and Parents/Guardians, Welcome to the Swift Creek Middle School Band program! I hope you had a relaxing and fun summer vacation. I am very excited about the upcoming school year and being part of a band program rich in tradition. I want to take this opportunity to introduce myself and tell you a few things about me. My name is Kelly Behnke and I have been teaching music for thirteen years. I have had the unique opportunity to teach music at various levels throughout my career. I started as a middle and high school band director in Michigan and then came to Florida to attain my Master’s degree in Music Education and Music Therapy at the Florida State University, Go Noles! After finishing my graduate degrees, I traveled back to the Midwest and became an assistant band director at the University of Notre Dame, Go Irish! Upon getting married, my husband and I decided to settle in Tallahassee, where I taught general music at Springwood Elementary for the three years. I am beginning my sixth year at Swift Creek and I look forward to an exciting and musically productive school year, Go Wolves! The handbook has been written to familiarize you with many aspects of the program, and to ensure an enjoyable and educationally rewarding musical experience. Please take the time to read the handbook as it explains many aspects of course offerings, grading and attendance policies and other important information for everyone. It can be found at our website, www.scmswolfband.com Once you have read the handbook in its entirety, please fill out the information sheet and return it to me as soon as possible. All students will be held accountable for the information contained in this handbook so please refer to the handbook for future reference. Information pertaining to the instrumental music program will also be e-mailed and on the band website. I hope that this handbook will be a guide that will lead you and your student to a successful experience as part of the instrumental music program. Please feel free to contact me by phone or email with any questions or concerns. We have many exciting activities and performances planned for the upcoming school year and I sincerely hope your student’s instrumental music experience will be a rewarding one!
