Programme of Study – Key Stage 3 – FRENCH
Summary
All boys at Isleworth & Syon learn either French or Spanish from Year 7. The most able students have the opportunity to
learn a second language (French or Spanish) in Year 8 and 9. The curriculum is fully differentiated to challenge and
support students of all abilities. In Key Stage 3 French we use the ‘Studio’ textbooks, interactive electronic resources,
games and songs to engage students in the language.
Year 7

Personal information (physical description, age, birthday, describing other people);

School (school subjects, opinions, telling the time, talking about food);

Hobbies (technology, sports, opinions);

Living environment (talking about a city, giving directions, saying where you go and asking how to go
somewhere, possible activities in the town)

Holidays (talking about getting ready to go out, buying drinks and snacks, talking about holiday plans, talking
about a dream holiday);

Cultural topics (music, cinema, poetry and literature).
Assessment: The students are assessed once per term in each of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Year 8

Free time (TV programs, movies, reading, the internet, what to do depending on the weather);

Paris (saying what you can do in Paris, opinions, asking for tourists information, giving an opinion about a past
visit, the 14th of July in Paris);

My identity (talking about personality, relationships, music, clothes, talking about last weekend);

My home (saying where you would like to live, describing your home, talking about meals, discussing what food
to buy, talking about a forthcoming event);

Talents (talking about talent and ambition, saying what you must and can do, telling someone what to do,
describing people’s personalities);

Discovery (the Francophonie, sciences, the French Revolution).
Assessment: The students are assessed once per term in each of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Year 9

My social life as a teenager (describing yourself, talking about Facebook, inviting someone out, describing a date,
describing a music event);

Healthy living (parts of the body, sport and fitness, healthy eating, making plans to get fit, describing levels of
fitness);

My future (talking about your future, learning languages, talking about jobs, talking about ambitions);

Holidays (adventure holidays, what you take on holiday, describing holiday disasters, visiting a tourist attraction);

Me and the world (your rights, priorities, shopping, what is happiness?)
Assessment: The students are assessed once per term in each of the four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
