This opportunity is open to FV SAOs in good standing that wish to conduct Family Leadership & Mentoring for Families of Cultural & Linguistic Diversity. Award: Up to $5,000 per SAO Number of Awards: 3-4 SAOs to be funded and mentored for one year Expectation: States are encouraged to apply project funds in a manner that reaches out and ensures participation by families of cultural diversity who may need supports to participate, such as transportation, respite, telephone, and other accommodations. Application Deadline: 7/1/14 Award Selections: 8/1/14 Funding Begins: 9/1/14 The Polly Arango Mentoring Fund seeks to attract new grassroots families of cultural and linguistic diversity for a new generation of family leaders that reflects the growing diverse populations within states and our nation, while building SAO state level leadership and advocacy. Polly Arango, beloved mother, friend and founder of Family Voices, was a passionate advocate for children with special health care needs and their families. Polly served as the first Family Voices Executive Director, which now has active chapters across the country. Polly’s vision included developing leadership among families of cultural diversity and richness. She cultivated new leaders and envisioned the leadership of Family Voices at the state and national leadership to reflect the color and diversity of our nation. Polly’s vision for a nationwide, empowered and vocal voice of families includes the voices of families with cultural and linguistic diversity. Leadership development through mentoring was one of Polly’s longstanding passions. To establish a lasting memorial to Polly, Family Voices will use funds from the Polly Arango Memorial Fund to establish a mentoring program. The mentoring program will support the growth of the Family Voices organization through the development and support of emerging family leaders with cultural and linguistic diversity. Family Voices State Affiliate Organizations (SAO) may apply to participate in the Polly Arango Mentoring Fund Initiative to enhance their capacity to identify, train, and support families from diverse racial, cultural and linguistic backgrounds to become family leaders. Three to four states will be selected for an award of up to $5,000 each to conduct and support family leadership training and mentoring within their state to grow family leadership among families of diversity. States may apply to develop a new program and/ or to integrate family leadership development and mentoring for families of diversity into its ongoing work.
