TYPES OF SCHOLARSHIPS
COURSES OF STUDY



Courses at Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Imperial College of Science & Technology in
any available subject.
Graduate courses at American and European Institutions in subjects including Architecture, Business
Administration, Communications (Film, Television, Journalism), Special Education and law,
Courses in Fine Arts, Applied Arts and Conservation, Design and Fashion Design, Theatre and Dance, Music
and Composition.
Candidates should have obtained admission to the University or Institute of their choice prior to submitting
the Inlaks application form. The Committee will consider only those candidates for interview, who have
obtained admission.
SPECIFIC PROJECTS PROPOSED BY THE CANDIDATE
Research, training or professional improvement to be carried out abroad either independently, or at a leading
institution. Candidates are expected to provide full details of proposed programmes, costs, evidence of agreement
with, and admission to, such institutions. Preference will be given to projects relevant to the Indian situation.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The selection is made by an independent Selection Committee on the basis of written applications followed by
personal interviews. The criteria are:
1. Potential and self motivation.
The candidates must show enterprise and the capacity to make an impact on one's
environment, the drive to transform ideas into reality and the ability to take full advantage
of all aspects of their experience abroad.
2. Achievement and evidence of initiative.
Candidates must provide evidence of their abilities in addition to Academic achievements. They must show
that they have already played a prominent role in some field such as the Arts, Communication, Debating,
Journalism, Social Work, Sports, Technology or the Theatre (These fields need not necessarily be related to
the proposed course). Age and opportunities available will be taken into consideration. Scholarships will not
be awarded to candidates whose proposed course of study or specific project require field trips to India during
their tenure.
3. Suitability of proposed course.
The candidates will be assessed on the value of their proposal not only to their own career but on the
contribution they will be able to make subsequently to their country and to the environment.
Scholarships are open to all Indian citizens of either sex who hold a good degree from a recognised university and are
resident in India at the time of application. They must be below 30 years of age on the first of July in the year of
application. Prior admission to an institution is absolutely necessary, the institutions concerned must of top rank only.
Preference will be given to candidates who have not yet studied abroad. Applications for MBA and Engineering
should have atleast two years working experience. The award of other grants, teaching assistantships and support
from other sources for the proposed programme will be regarded by the foundation as a positive factor. The
foundation also encourages applications from young people who are currently employed. Candidates are advised to
consult the relevant university prospectus before applying for a particular course. They are also advised not to submit
their application unless all requirements have been fulfilled.
Application Procedure
Application forms are obtained from January 7 to April 15 2003 from :

They must be completed and returned by April 20, 2003 and must include:
1. Evidence of admission to a university or a course. Candidates in Architecture, Fine arts, Applied Arts and
related subjects must submit twelve colour transparencies, of recent creative work, in a plastic folder giving
the size of the original, the material used and the date completed. This material will not be returned.
2. Candidates for Film, Dance and Acting must submit video cassette VHS, which will be returned.
3. Candidates for music should submit a tape.
4. Two self - addressed stamped, (Rs. 6.00) envelopes (4" * 9")
The final interviews take place in May/June 2001, for candidates taking up places in 2001. All applicants must be
available for interviews in India. Candidates who do not receive any communication by June 1, 2001 must assume
that their application has been unsuccessful.
TENURE OF SCHOLARSHIPS
The scholarships cover return travel, tuition fees and adequate living expenses for the period granted. Tenure of other
scholarships, teaching assistantships and part time jobs are permitted. The scholarships are not awarded to anyone
who has already started a course of study or a project abroad.

Rules for the Award of Debesh-Kamal Scholarships for Higher Education/Research Abroad
1. Debesh-Kamal Scholarships will be awarded by the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Calcutta, to
deserving candidates for the purpose of higher education/research abroad. The scholarships will be open to
Indian nationals irrespective of caste, creed, or religious faith.
2. Applications
o Applications for the scholarships, as well as any subsequent correspondence, are to be addressed to
the Secretary, Ramamkrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Calcutta 700 029, and the
envelopes should carry the inscription 'Debesh-Kamal Scholarship"
o Candidates will have to submit, along with their completed application form, a Postal Order/Bank
Draft for Rs.50/- in favour of the Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, as the
application fee which is not refundable.
o Last date for receiving the Application form, complete in sll respect, at the Ramakrishna Mission
Institute of Culture, Gol Park, Calcutta 700 029, is 21 April 2003.
3. Qualification and Age
o The candidates must have a uniformly good academic record with first class marks at the Honours or
Post graduate level, relaxable by the selection committee.
o They should not ordinarily be more than 30 years of age. Expections may be made for short-term post
graduate or post doctoral researchers.
4. Area of Study
The preferred subjects of study/research are the humanities and the basic sciences, but candidates in other
disciplines, such as social sciences and applied science and technology, will be considered.
5. Other Conditions
o The candidates will have to submit evidence of their having been admitted to a course of
study/research at a major university or comparable academic instituion abroad.
o Research students/scholars will have to submit along with their applications an outline of their project
as may have been approved by the university/institution concerned.
6. Mode of Application
o Application form can be obtained by applying with a self-addressed stamped envelope to The
Secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture, Gol Park , Calcutt-700 029.
o All candidates must submit application in the prescribed form , with a passport size photograph, along
with relevant papers as well as attested photocopies of certificates, marksheets etc.
o Candidates short-listed from an evaluation of their applications will have to appear before a Selection
Committee at the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of culture, Calcutta. They will have to bear their own
travelling expenses. But the candidates who will appear for interview from distance beyond 100 km
may be paid II Class Railway fare. The decision of the Selection Committee about the eligibility of a
candidate and his/her selection shall be final.
7. Value and Tenure of the Scholarship
o The value of a scholarship will be around Rs. 1.00 lakh for one year only. Since this amount will not
be adequate for studies abroad, candidates will have to produce acceptable evidence of other resources
or committed financial support.
o Debesh-Kamal Scholarship will be tenable for one year only.

Eligibility
Indian national. Age 30-40 yrs as on October of the in-take year. Qualifications- uniformly
brilliant academic record (with 60% marks at Master's degree level) with Ph D degree in the

experience at Graduate/Post-Graduate level.
Value /Passage Cost
Stipend of Pounds 18,580 and economy class air passage (both ways) borne by the
Government of India.
