A coach may provide a current student-athlete with a wedding present Quiz Question #1 Answer • True- NCAA Interpretation: “determined that such an arrangement would be precluded, unless it is demonstrated that the coach provides such gifts to all the weddings he or she attends, and the gift is consistent with the type of gifts normally given” Rules Quiz (question #2) True or False? During the first week of class a student-athlete may compete while enrolled less than full-time, so long as they are sitting in on the classes that they intend on adding and their advisor is aware of the situation. John Pop Quiz (question #2 answer) The answer is false: • 14.1.8.2 Requirement for Competition. • To be eligible for competition, a student-athlete shall be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time program of studies leading to a baccalaureate or equivalent degree, which shall not be less than 12 semester or quarter hours. (Revised: 6/1/07) Key Points to Remember • For practice only, student-athlete may participate in first five days of semester while still working out their academic schedule; however, they must be enrolled at least part-time • For competition, student-athlete must be enrolled full-time (always always always!) other than between terms and in their last semester of competition if approved for graduation (through Enrollment Services, SAS and Compliance) in <12 hours. Compliance Meeting (Set up a time with Jennifer) Conduct and SAAP Programs • Reminder : it is not an option to not report SA issues to your sport administrator. • Also there are some new supplements out that trigger positive results on drug tests. Be sure to remind your SAs that any supplement should be checked out by Andy before use… Coach Dismissals related to StudentAthlete Issues • Reminder that new generation of student-athlete does want to be coached well and worked hard, • Reminder when things go wrong with a studentathlete situation, best to inform administration and deal with the issue…do not cover it up.. • In 2 of the 3 cases, it appears the situation could have been solved without the coach being fired…….. • Remember….things always come up with so many student-athletes and sports…and sometimes people make mistakes…... It is how we manage the issues that is important….. Scholarship Costs • As you know fees increased again this year after our budget was set. • As these costs rise , our Annual Fund has gone up but not at the same rate • We all need to be more mindful as we use scholarship dollars: ▫ Make student-athletes aware that failing grades and D’s that cause class retakes…..cost money and delay graduation ▫ Make every effort to stay within the 75-25 scholarship guidelines for your sport…this is our budgeted base……instate is definitely less costly than out-of-state ▫ Encourage gifts to the BDF annual fund…..scholarship dollars are the basis for our program…. Initial Eligibility • Please continue to encourage your PSAs to have all transcripts through their Junior year/7th Sem senior year sent to the Eligibility Center for certifications. • Please make sure that they have ALL their Test Scores submitted as well. • 7th Semester transcripts (& 8th Sem IP schedules) should be submitted to advisors as soon as they are available. • Final Amateurism Request- April 1 Recruiting Reminders • Please have all phone calls and contacts/evaluations through the end of the year entered into CAi immediately. • Please have all documents together and submitted to compliance before requesting a visit. Please do not expect compliance to do the leg work. Mountain West Conference • On monthly calls with SWA’s dealing with reports from coaches’ meetings.. • Yesterday learned we are scheduled to host 2014 MWC Cross Country Championship… • Although we are a year away please continue to be on calls and especially try to determine if there are things we need to change per hosting or event management, video exchange, etc so we can plan.. Reminders • Keep your squad-list clean and up to date. ▫ Please review before the beginning of the semester ▫ Report all changes to Jennifer Student-athletes may not appear in movies, reality shows etc., without prior approval from Compliance. Their eligibility may be negatively effected • Next meeting February 8, 2011
