January Reflection Papers
Due Monday, February 9, 2015
(note the extra week!)
Writing Topics / Please address in your paper:
1. How are you preparing for semester finals?
2. How are you utilizing the College GreenLight resource?
3. JUNIORS: What are you doing to prep for your ACT and WorkKeys skills
assessment on March 3rd and 4th, respectively?
Writing Reflection Papers is a requirement to UBMS program participation.
Failure to do so will count as an absence.

UBMS Handbook Update
Effective February 1, 2015
Please note the change to our “Repeated Absence” policy which now reads:
Repeated Absences
Repeated unexcused absences and/or unmet program expectations (including writing
reflection papers and academic check ins) will not be tolerated, particularly without the
appropriate notification. It is expected that parents or guardians will communicate with
the UBMS administrative staff to provide proper notification of anticipated repeated
absences. Violation of this rule will result in disciplinary actions.
After 3 unexcused absences and/or unmet program expectations in an Academic Year or
summer session UBMS students and parents will receive a written notification from
Program Staff. After 5 unexcused absences and/or unmet program expectations in an
Academic Year or summer session, students and parents will be required to meet with
UBMS Program Staff. After 7 unexcused absences and/or unmet program expectation

Male Mentoring Program:
Ebony Vision of Fond du Lac is sponsoring a Male Mentoring Program that kicks off
January 31st. Young men, if you are interested in having a male mentor in your life,
please contact Tracy for more information.

Scholarship Opportunities:
Selma Speech and Essay Contest - For US high school students ages 14-18 as of the
contest deadline. To apply, applicants must watch the movie "Selma," about Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Then they must submit an essay and a speech (reading of the essay) on
a given topic related to the protection of individual freedom and self-determination.

Southland Electrical Supply Essay - This scholarship is for students studying or planning
to study a STEM (science, technology, engineering, or math) major or a related field or
trade. To apply, applicants must submit an essay exploring how innovation affects the
science, technology, and trade industry.

Hands-On Help with Scholarship Applications:
UBMS Staff will be at your school during Cardinal and Oriole Times to walk you through
the scholarship application process. Come with your fully charged Chromebook. We will
be accessing information from your College GreenLight account.
This workshop is optional.

The next PAG Meeting is scheduled for Monday, February 16th

Get FREE, on-site professional assistance completing the FAFSA (Free Application for
Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is the form you must complete to be considered for grants
and loans to help pay for college. We are requesting all Seniors attend unless you provide
evidence that your FAFSA is already complete.

Tutoring
Every Wednesday from 3-5 p.m.
Stayer Center, Room 212/213
Tutoring is available to ALL students.
If at any time a student would like some extra help, even for one week, you are
encouraged to come. However, we do ask that you register with staff ahead of time so
we know to expect you.
Tutors are available to help with Math, Science, English, and Spanish.
For student required to attend tutoring sessions, please use this time wisely. Come
prepared with homework, study guides, or to simply have your work reviewed.
This can also be a time to review Skyward activity, visit career cruising sites, write
reflection papers or get help with resumes and/or college and scholarship applications.
Effective January 28, 2015, tutoring will be in T217/218

Marian University’s Student Leadership Conference

This year’s theme will be on “authentic leadership.” James Robilotta from Campuspeak will be
the keynote speaker. Following the welcome and keynote there will be 2 breakout sessions,
11-noon and 1-2pm. The closing will begin at 2:15pm.
Registration will be required. Please watch for more information.
UBMS will cover the cost of this to our students.
