Top Tip..
Time management - produce a timetable for
revision and stick to it!
Don't leave everything to the last minute - you can't
revise the entire curriculum in one night.
So plan ahead to avoid a last-minute panic

Cut radio contact - Otherwise known as switch off
your mobile phone. Incoming calls and texts are
just too tempting, especially if the alternative is
memorising irregular verbs. Turn off the computer,
unless you are visiting a revision website e.g. at
www.s-cool.co.uk you will get given lots and lots of
nice ticks when you get the answers right.

Top Tip..
Stay fresh - Revision is most effective when done
in timed 45 minute bursts, with a 10-minute break
in between. That way, you don't fall asleep at your
post. The best way to stick to this is to post your
timetable in a public place (the fridge door works
well). That way, not only you, but the rest of your
family, know the times when you are meant to be
studying.

Top Tip..
Be active when revising - it's not good enough just
reading through your notes.
Do past questions, make posters and mind maps mix things up to make it more interesting. Revising
with friends is a good way of reinforcing what you
do know and finding out what you don't. At its most
basic level, you can test each other on vocabulary.

they relate to a subject is no good. Attend all

Start Early - The mind is much more alert first thing
in the morning. Also, it means you can get your
day's revising out of the way by lunchtime. Start
with the subject you like least, while your powers
are still at their strongest.

Read the question carefully - if you misread the
question your answer will be wrong. Practise on
past exam papers or revision tests available on the
web Initially do one section at a time and progress
to doing an entire paper against the clock.

Set an objective for each study session, but keep it attainable.
It's far more rewarding to cross items off a list than to add
them on. Setting your goals smaller means you have a higher
chance of making them, and the sense of satisfaction and
enthusiasm you’ll get from reaching each goal will drive you
forward. Set the goal at the start of each study session and
not some time in advance. By doing it this way you’ll have a
better ‘feel’ for how you’re mentally prepared on the day to
deal with whatever goal you set yourself.

Reading can be useless - You can’t do decent revision
through sitting with a boring textbook willing the information
to go into your head. It will sit stubbornly, remaining in the
textbook, refusing to make the jump into your brain. You
have to do something with the information. Take notes,
underline stuff, invest in a set of highlighters and colour
code everything that moves, do drawings and put pieces of
information into table form. If you do something with the
information it will stay in your head way better than if you
just sat there reading.

Use positive self-talk
People who tell themselves they can’t do things
invariably find that they are right. People who tell
themselves they can are right too. During your
revision and during the exam itself, keep telling
yourself, “I can do this.” You’ll find you can

Take some time to research what the exam is like, the
format of the exam and the type of questions that you
might encounter. Always get this information directly
from an official certifying source. Do this periodically
throughout your studying period to make sure you
have up-to-date information, and particularly just
before you are ready to take the exam.

Take steps to overcome problems. If you find you

getting stressed out won't help. Instead, take
action to address the problem directly by seeing

Stress Busting Top Tip..
Believe in yourself. You wouldn't have been given
a place on the course if you didn't have the ability
to do it. Therefore, if you prepare for the exams

Don't try to be perfect. It's great to succeed and reach for
the stars. But keep things in balance. If you think that
"anything less than A+ means I've failed" then you are
creating mountains of unnecessary stress for yourself. Aim
to do your best but recognise that none of us can be perfect
all of the time.

Although some people swear by the library, cognitive
scientists suggest that alternating study spaces is a
more effective way to retain information, according to the
Times. Memory is coloured by location, and changing
your study location increases the likelihood of
remembering what you’ve learned.

Sometimes the best habits are the ones we’ve used
forever. Flash cards are oldies but goodies –- writing
notes and definitions more than once will help imprint
information in your memory, and the cards are a great
way to develop and use mnemonic devices and
associative phrases.
