Information on IXs, Repeats and Resits
relating to First Semester 2011-2012 modules
Important Information for students of English who have been granted an IX grade
(‘Incomplete due to Extenuating Circumstances’) or who have failed a module or modules.
IX Grades:Any student who has an IX should contact the module coordinator for that
module as soon as possible; the module coordinator will set an alternative assessment. This
assessment should normally be completed by the middle of the current semester, during
Spring 2012: in other words, by the middle of the semester following the one in which you
originally took the module. UCD regulations require that where an IX has been granted, the
final date by which the missing assessment must be completed, is the end of the semester
following the one in which the module was originally taken. (This means that where an IX
assessment granted at Christmas 2011 has not been completed by the end of the examination
period in Summer 2012, the IX becomes null and void; the total module result then becomes
finalized as though you had never applied for the IX – usually, this will be a much lower
grade, often a fail). You are strongly advised to complete IX assessments well before the
major demands of preparation for the upcoming examination period begin.
Resit and Repeat Students
Level 1 and Level 2 English
ALL students who have failed core/co-core English modules are RESIT students and will be
examined by end-of-semester examination in the Summer examination session in May 2012. The
exception to this is ENG 10090 Coming of Age Narratives. This module will be examined by
essay. Assessment for Resit Students is marked pass/fail only, with the grade capped at 2.0 for
GPA (grade point average) purposes, that is, at a D- grade.
Level 3 English
Students who have failed English option modules that are not offered in semester 2 of 2011-12
must complete a resit assignment set by the module coordinator. Students should contact the
individual Module Coordinators or the School Administrator for the resit assignment. It is entirely
the student’s responsibility to make contact. This assignment is due by 4pm to the School Office
(J206) on or before Wednesday 21 March 2012. This assignment is marked Pass/Fail, with the
grade capped at 2.0 for GPA (grade point average) purposes, that is, at a D- grade.
Students who have failed options that are on offer again in Semester 2, 2011-2012 will be
registered as REPEAT students unless they make alternative arrangements (e.g. substitute the
module). These students must repeat ALL components of the module which means that they
attend classes, complete continuous assessment and end-of-semester assignments along with all
the other students taking the module for the first time. The grade for a repeat assessment is capped
at 2.0, but the grade earned before capping will appear on your transcript followed by the letter ‘R’
to indicate ‘Repeat’.
Level 3 Lecture-Only Modules (ENG 30700 and ENG 30710)
Both modules will be assessed by end-of semester examination in the Summer Examination
period, 2012. The grade for this resit assessment is capped at 2.0.
